This is not so easy to research, as it turns out, so I thought better to ask the question. When researching this the difficulties I came up against were:
  • often there is no mention of how many cards in the specs - can assume 1 only - but if it's a retail site they can be lazy or perhaps ignorant (many are inconclusive at best)
  • manufacturers sites often don't date when the DAP was released, so it might be 4-5 year old technology
  • many of the 2x slots that I turned up say "up to 200GB each card" which is significantly less useful than a single 512GB card - which are relatively cheap now
  • with reference to the last point those sizes are often stated as that was the max size card that was around at that time (e.g. my Shanling M3s was rated for 256GB, but I now use 512GB and I'm told 1TB is fine). So that also indicates they are older.

Maybe I have this wrong, but it seems to me that a DAP made before 2018 is now pretty old news in this rapidly developing market.

So, which recent DAPs (preferably Android) can take two Micro SD cards?

I have found:
FiiO M11 (which actually states "Theoretically 4TB (dual micro SD card slot)" )
Onkyo DP-X1 but these are a bit old now (states dual micro SD of 256GB each - but can that now be more???)
Pioneer XDP-300R (says dual, up to 200GB which indicates it too is old)
Opus #1 but they are also 4-5 years old.

Can't seem to find an Astell & Kearn with dual slots.

Two slots seem to come with some possible issues, that's why Fiio moved from two slots to one slot going from M11 to M11 Pro and M15. This is from their website:
" 5. Considering the perforation of high capacity micro SD cards, a single SD card slot should suffice the requirement of most users, moreover, majority of the offerings in the market today also sports of a single SD card slot design. In order to avoid disparity in the data transfer rate causing concerns, we are considering the possibility of removing the dual micro SD card slot design in future batches of the M11. "

Hope you find your prefered DAP :)

 That's the problem - a 1TB card is now reasonably affordable....but I need a 2TB card...and they don't exist yet (and when Sandisk does produce one it'll be hell expensive for a year or more).

However, I don't quite understand what they mean by:
" In order to avoid disparity in the data transfer rate causing concerns "

What disparity? Different rates between the two cards? Or is it just meaning "we don't know how to make this work properly"?

It seems a dumb move by DAP makers just now that the Hi-res audio booms to only offer 1 slot players (even worse with low than 128GB internal). My music collection is right now 1.33TB

Used FiiO M5II...decent for FLAC, great for MP3, crap for DSD and high sample rate APE.

But they were made when 128G cards were the latest thing and 2 of them cost almost as much as the DAP.

One advantage of not being an Android-based DAP is that the M5II is the same as it ever was, same as it ever was.

While the M5III is kinda not very handy when there are no more Android updates

On my custom DAP, I should be able to stretch to 3TB if I add a pro high speed card reader. I just unplug where the USB stick is now and plug in the card reader.
