What's your best experience for an amp for AKG K 701s?

All depends on how much you want to spend me thinks.
The best I've heard it with was the Luxman P-1u, but at what price...
On the other hand I found the K701 dit pretty well with the LD MKIII as well which is an incredible amp for its price.
About every dedicated headphone amp will outperform your receiver or speaker amps headphone output for sure.
And as the K701 is quite revealing a decent source won't hurt as well.

JB197, who that specialist and can you tell us about it?

Nick, apologies for the short delay in this reply. After I read your request I e-mailed them and the guy behind the company said they were not ready for full public launch yet and wanted to keep a low profile until then, so I will respect that. (I only found out about the company by word-of-mouth, which I understand is how they have sold their previous amps up until now). He said expect publicity in September this year. So not so long to go.

Kenwood supreme 600, kenwood 700m.  so far the best i have heard with the akg 701s.  I had RSA XP7.  the Xp7 Sounds good and clean, but the kenny600 takes those cans to a whole different level.  maybe it's because it's 130 wpc padded down.  or maybe it's because i changed all caps in the signal path to polypropelene caps.

I'm on my second go-round with K702s -- this time Black Dragon recabled. I strongly prefer them with a tube amp (in my case, a Mapletree) to any of the SS amps I have (C2, GLite, KICAS). Really balances out some of the unnatural sparkle that made me sell my first pair.

I prefer a tube amp. It does balance the spectrum and gives a 3-D feel to the soundstage. Finding the right tubes to compliment the 701s just puts a smile on my face.

I've had my 701's for about four years and love them each time I listen to them.  I have both the MF xcan v8 and the LD MKIII and enjoy each of them for what they do.  The LD is fun because it's easy to change the tubes and when you change the tubes you change the music.  It never ends.  But don't forget the source.  Amps and headphones, like most equipment, only sound as good as your weakest link.

To those that have re-cabled their 701s, How hard is it to recabled it yourself?  I am thinking of recableling them with Homegrown audio Solid silver braid (22agw), but i am not sure how to do it through only one side of the headphone.  Hmmm, maybe i should do a search

i will have 3 sets of Mogami 2534 terminated with Switchcraft connectors for K702 re-cable next week.  i'm selling these at cost, $23 for a 10ft length.   if you want shorter or longer, subtract/add $1 per foot.  PM me if interested.

I need to recable them, what do I need for that.

see here: http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/378255/akg-k702-build-your-own-cable

i used the larger Switchcraft TA3FL mini-XLR.  you still need to open the the cable boot a little bigger to accommodate the diameter of the Mogami 2534: http://www.audiogear.com/Switchcraft-Mini-XLR-Connectors.html

and for the TRS plug, Switchcraft SW297: http://www.audiogear.com/Switchcraft-Phone-Connectors.html

i would also recommend a cheap DVM to double check your work.

i like Switchcraft and use their RCA/1/4" phone jacks on my amp builds and plugs for ICs.

Neutrik may be easier to source in Oz.

i don't want to derail this thread.  please PM me with any questions.  i would be more than happy to help.
