This is where most of the music is -- horns, strings, the human voice. It is manifestly important, IMO, so as I look to the next set of cans to add to my Ety ER6 and Senn HD580, what has the most transparent, detailed and just plain beautiful midrange? No mud allowed....

K701
K601
DT880
D2000
Others?

For me, it was the W11JPN - may not be as accurate or transparent as others....but it had a sweetness and luxuriousness about it which is hard to match.

If your aim is clarity, transparency, detail, and utter effortlessness - K1000 (so long as it is properly amped).

Does the king need to be in a certain price-range? I heard that Grado's seem to do really good in the mid-range.

They do indeed. Unfortunately, the OP (as stated in other threads) can't use Grados due to fit issues. Too bad. I think he's after strictly circumaural headphones, in which case I would have to say that my own likings draw me to AKGs in general (K501/601/271S).

I love the midrange of the Stax SR-007.

I have limited experience & haven't used a wide array of HPs (yet), so maybe I'm not the best judge....but I am currently being blown away by the transparency & detail of the SR-404's midrange.

Silky smooth midrange is such a stand-out characteristic of the W5000 that I'd think it would have to be included on any "king of midrange" list.

My non-Grado midrange favorites, ranked, are:

1. AKG K-1000
2. Beyerdynamic DT-48
3. AKG K-501
4. AKG K-240DF
5. Beyerdynamic DT880

I don't think K-701 mids are terribly special.

How would you place the Grados within that list, Uncle Erik?

Now there's one you don't see mentioned every day. I've never heard it, but am now on a mission to check this out. I've all but given up on other beyerdynamic headphones for one reason or another in each case, but this one sounds interesting.

There are a lot of cans with very good midrange, theres never a one beats all headphone. It just depends what type of midrange your looking for I think, i.e. smooth/liquid, transparent, detailed, etc. From the cans i own though probably the K340, K240, W5k have midrange that I like, with the K340 being lush, K240 being emotional, W5k i cant really describe, its just there. The HD650 while good sounded there were cotton stuck up in my ear clouding stuff up.
