Yo Yo Ma's first recording of Bach's Suites for Cello Solo. I heard it on LP, and thought it a great candidate for the "perfect sound forever" that CD's promised when they were new.

Does vinyl count because I really dont remember the first CD I ever bought, but I do remember this...

Rule: Vinyl does not count.

I must say that I'm surprised and a bit amazed to find out that it wasn't terribly unusual to buy CDs in anticipation of a player. I thought my situation was somewhat unique.

I was into cassette tapes for a long time even after CD's became popular because I had a nice tape deck based system. But if I think long and hard, I think the first cd would be Metallica's Black album. Lent it to a few people in high school and since then it has trouble playing tracks 9 and 10 :(

I then got the cool gold cd version of Michael Jackson's HIStory and it was really cool and had an awesome booklet. Then a friend of mine lost it :(

well, this might be wrong but the way I remember it, at least, my first CDs were not bought but given to me for participating in recordings. they were then still competing with vinyl for space in stores. the oldest CDs I own, anyway, seem to be those... and they are awful! ;-)

I had to take a look at my collection since I mainly got CDs as gifts for years after I had something to play them with (wasn't that much into music at the time, y'know, which spared me from the likes of Milli Vanilli), but it seems the first one I explicitly bought was when I got into "audiophile" material last decade.

I think I had the '96 remaster first but got the original '85 edition soon after. Both have their flaws. Not something I listen to very often any more, unlike Mike Oldfield's Amarok that was to follow next.
