Can't really help you, but I just needed to comment on your awesome name.

Yeah I know my experiences with modern portable CD players have been rather disappointing. The older ones with better SQ aren't really portable, and new ones are hit or miss (mostly miss, from what I gather).

Have you considered a DAP?

pcdp available now are much worse than those ancient discman
like philips CDF100 CD10 CD15 AZ6819,sony z-555 d100 which have incredible SQ,but their monster-like size &weight and sky-high prize will shock you
wherears modern discmans are portable, cheap, but their SQ is bad
so ,it depends on you

IMHO the panasonic PCDPs are conjested, a little rolled off in the highs. A little "flat" sounding to my ears. Although my CT430 is my fave of all my panasonic players. It was a Japan only release, optical out and 10 second un-compressed ESP. Kind of a nice diversion when iwant a very relaxed sound, and dont care to pick apart every little detail in my head.

My D335 is a better player than any of my panasonics.

Im also a big fan of the magnavox AX68## players... they have a lot of bass and treble boost though. So they might not be to your liking.

I suggest you to look out for Sony D-E900/E905. This model has very detailed line out and very good sounding headphone out. It also comes with 10 sec ESP^2 so it should be o.k. for moving around (not by much though). I still couldn't believe how much this player sound next to my ipod and my Sony Pocket Vaio.

thanks guys
if I understand correctly the sony d-e900 is not that great to walk around because it only has 10 sec ESP^2 and is bigger than the sl-ct790 because of the aa batteries... is the difference in sound quality that huge? because I need one I can carry with me all the time

okay now I found a d-e900 on ebay and since most of you seem to think this is as good as pcdp gets to play redbooks I just need to ask you guys 2 questions, does it use the same gumstick batteries as the sl-ct790? how much should I pay for a used unit?

Hi,
Yes, it uses the same gumstick. My max will be 150 dollars for it (use your judgement). The D-E900 was retail for 300 bucks when it first came out. The D-E900 was top of the line in 1999 or 1998. Well worth the money, IMO.

You should realize that the D-E900 that is on e-bay is missing a wired LCD remote. Again, you will need this since the player doesn't have display on the unit.

iRiver still has the imp-50/ChromeX for $19.99 on their site.

As great as all those PCDPs may sound, they're really more transportable than portable. Probably not what your looking for.

I never used to look at the display on my old pcdp so I won't need it

Funny we should be talking about the Sony D-NE900 since I just bought one myself. I was looking for a cheap, good quality CD player to replace my dying three-year-old one. This wasn't a player I was considering since it was out of my price range, but I stumbled onto Tweeter.com and they had it listed (the only portable cd player on their site) marked down to $28 AND free shipping! I don't know if it's still there, though.
