What would you do with my discman? (slightly malfunctioning D-EJ725)

The D-EJ725 discman I bought on New Year's Day (
biggrin.gif
) does not work properly. (
frown.gif
) However it is only a minor complaint: it skips and sometimes refuses to play when the battery is down to 1 or 2 out of 4 on the battery indicator. I'm not yet sure, but I think its battery life might be still pretty good, even when this problem is taken into account. (The bundled NiCd batts are advertised to give 8 hrs battery life with G-prot. off. On the second charge, (supposedly the first few charges will give less charge capacity) I'm into the 3rd hour of playing, with 4/4 on the batt. indicator

)

This discman is still in its return / exchange period, so I can go back to the store and ask for another one. On the other hand
(1) The 725 is 'discontinued' in HK
eek.gif
and they would have to order one for the exchange and I'd have to wait
mad.gif

(2) How do I know the new new one would work perfectly?

Some people say that so-called B-stock (that is, if I understand correctly, items rejected by the first buyer, fixed by the company to be resold?) actually work better than A-stock. If so, should I just take the 725 to Sony to get it fixed?

Do you think the technicians at Sony would find the problem with my pcdp and fix it? Heard some funny stories about things not getting fixed for the complaint they were originally sent in with (e.g. Koss KSC35 earclip holding tab broken, 'repaired' by replacing gold plug on the mini jack
biggrin.gif
)
eek.gif

Maybe I shouldn't do anything with it.

(3rd choice)

Like I said, I have the anti-Midas touch

Many of my old computers never worked properly.

486 hanged all the time
Added a Voodoo1 card to my ole Pentium 133. Which died a slow and horrible death starting when I installed the card.

Damn and i thought i had some miserable luck with electronics:

Had a Sony TV from 1985...one of those cabinet ones (27" tube), tube died 1990. Got a Magnovox which i loathed. Decided to fix the Sony in 1997 via Sears. Went thru 4 tubes...YES 4 TUBES in a span of 2 years, finally gave up and bought a nice 35" Sony. Why did i wanna fix the old Sony so bad? Picture was ok, but the speakers kicked ass! Really nice sound, and loud...until a lightning bolt shot down my alley during a freak thunderstorm and blew out the speakers...that was the final straw.

And there's lots more....

Hi Joe

Personally I dont think Its a problem, most indicators arent very reliable like the fuel gauge on old cars. Usually the indicator "looks" full till the batt has like a bit left b4 it dies then it goes from 4/4 to 0/4 really fast.
So with you getting skips sometimes/refuses to play with 1-2/4 I think is ok since it still reckons its 4/4 (practically full) with 3-4 hrs under its belt.
biggrin.gif

Other option is bring it in and get the 925
biggrin.gif

I have been using my 925 for like almost 3 weeks now for about 2 hrs each day and more during the weekends and the indicator still reckons its full :> either I got a super 925 that dont drain batt power much or the indicator is lying to me
tongue.gif

Hope this helps

Oh btw, from xp with nicd batts, they die soooooooo fast with pcds compared to nimh.

Get your money back, and start shopping again.

As far a horror stories about buying gadgets...beat this>>>

One South Florida big brands type of mart has a good selection of TV's. I wanted 32".

Chose a nice Proscan. Got it home, picture was distorted.
Asked for an exact exchange.

Got second Proscan. Same exact problem. The "mart" sent out it's tech, they did not believe me. He said "pincushion distortion", bad TV.

Got a better model Proscan.
That lasted three days before the sound died.
Yep. Three.

Then got a nice SONY. Mistake. It's picture would flip for a while
when cold. My theory (ex electronics hardware type) was bad power supply. This time, I asked for a different repair company,
not the store yokel...someone with a real reputation. They hauled it away (got sick of exchanging, and arguing with store).
Came back fixed! Bad power supply lead. Ok so far, after three years...knock on wood (I tap my head).

FOUR BAD TV's from that store. I would say...refurbished or returns are repackaged and resold. I don't shop there anymore.

Last two experiences were with two mp3 jukeboxes. Fortunately, bought them locally, so exchange was no problem.
EXCHANGE POLICYs matter! Got a 4 year warranty on the device too. I don't have a lot of luck with a lot of stuff. About 50% of the stuff I buy is bad.

In that case *why* does *everyone* votes to ask for an exchange? Has anyone read my rationale for (2)? Seems to me freepdb would vote (2) if anyone would...

Dang, and the exchange period is up today... I want replies guys!

Haven't got a *working* multimeter at home
redface.gif
but I tried putting the battery that the 725 was having trouble with into my old D-E554--it flat-out refused to start, same thing with my brother's early-model G-prot. pcdp

So I guess that batt. is well and completely drained--I'm betting the problem with my 725 is in the battery indicator, not its power management--I suppose it tries to keep playing when it should have shouted 'low batt' long ago, which causes the trouble
cool.gif

For now I'm choosing option (3)
cool.gif
I think I'll experiment with it some more before thinking of exchanging or repairing it--if it ain't broke, don't fix it
cool.gif

Don't worry Ctn
