Being that I have only heard the HD650's with the "cloth" removed, I will by default have to choose the HD650's. Deveiled they sound AMAZING!

That must really be "without a good amp", like you said... As the stock cable is fine.

I also have yet to hear the 880's, but chalk me up for the 650's - I agree with most people here, 701's are very analytical and for me enough to be boring.

In contrast the 650's are a party on my ears

I think the K701 and the HD650 are a bit of a step up from the DT880. But it's really impossible to decide between those two. I'd say:

K701
HD650
DT880

I would also add the SA5000 and the AD2000 into this category, and you would have the top 5 under $500 headphones.

Owning two of them and having heard the HD650 several (long) times, I say:

1. DT880
2. K701
4598. HD650

I suggest listening to HD600, too. Much more ballanced then the HD650 and so it fits my listening preferances quite well. And of course it's much cheaper.

Certainly a smattering of views here. I should say that I can't stand vocals through any headphones, so that is not a criteria in my order of preference. My listening is mostly classical instrumental, with some jazz and a few assorted other styles mixed in.

I really think the HD600 beats them all in overall musical presentation (just my opinion, and probably some will agree with this)

However, having to choose from the list, and having owned all three:

1. HD650 By a nose over the K701, mainly because of the amout of body and fullness, but all too often an unnatural overabundance of these characteristics as well.

2. K701 Really good balance, and difficult to criticize, but often just a certain lack of "chemistry" with my musical sensibilities.

3. DT880 For picking apart and finding flaws in a recording or performance, these would be far and away my choice. For musical enjoyment though, I often found myself distracted by the incredible, but unnatural amout of detail. You'd have to have the hearing of a couger or something to be able to hear all of that detail in real life. Certainly is cool to hear sometimes though.

I haven't heard the DT880s yet, so I can't make a proper ranking. I tried the K701s for a while, but they just didn't float my boat. I can see why ppl say they're neutral (and some people like that feeling), but I got tired of neutrality and went crawling back to the 650s. I love that hd650 bass even if ppl call it flabby, congested, overemphasized, etc, etc. Makes the music sound nice and full.
