ha ha nice post. Please no one else say good things about the Lambda Pro. I have already had a longing to get a pair.

Nothing is as fun as the RS-1. Even if neutrality is your thing, you should have a pair handy. Get a second job or sell something to get the money. They're worth it.

To be fun I'd say a headphone or earphone would have to have a fairly big bottom end (although not out of control), and excellent PRaT. When you listen to your favorite upbeat music it should put a smile on your face and get you dancing, jumping, or at least toe tapping.

I'd have to beg to differ on this one. The RS-1 usually has me pulling them off within a few minutes because they're so bright and fatiguing.

Many feel the Grados are the go to headphones for the fun factor, and they may be right. But they aren't the only fun headphones, the Beyer dt990 compete handly in this area too.

For the cheaper end of the spectrum I don't see how you can beat the Koss Sporta Pros for fun either.

You mention wanting an IEM so if fun is the question, I think that you have to look at the V-Moda Vibes. They are definitely coloured with a solid lower end and IMHO more strength in the mids than the extreme upper end. It's actually a bit shocking to switch immediately back to my D77s which are a fairly neutral monitor. (What the D77s and the Vibes have in common is that neither would be described as especially bright.) But the Vibes really are great fun for walking down the street or riding the streetcar and rocking on. They've changed my entire commute. My theory is that I'll be using these phones until they wear out and/or I just have to spend hundereds of dollars on the Ety ER-4S (insofar as one has look forward to something...)

the denon d5000 is a FUN headphone! makes my head bang uncontollably with certain music.

the akg 701 is a fun headphone. i get lost in etherial soundscapes, especailly female vocal jazz. puts an uncontrollable smile on my face.

my grado sr-125 is a fun headphone. I put them on and go for a good bike ride up in the mountains and the music keeps me hammering away uncontrollably.

my ok1s are fun headphones also use them bike riding and at home. they are the most comfortable headphone and make me smile uncontrollably when I think I am listening to full sized headphones.

My etymotic er6s i find hard to call fun. but they are great when you want to seal out the noise from the outside world. but i think they are to uncomfortable to call them fun.

In the interest of clarity...

What do you personally mean when you talk about a "fun" headphone?

I usually see it as an insult, or damning with faint praise. Typical usage is "Headphone X is not audiophile, but it is fun".

A headphone can be bright or dark or warm, bass centric or treble focussed etc, these terms more or less describe tangible aspects, which can be measured. But "fun" is the same as enjoyment, and yes I guess you measure it by the smile on one's dial, however it is going to vary from individual to individual. Music evokes fun (or another emotion) I don't think fun is a very good term to describe any headphone, it is way to subjective and means nothing. A dark phone (bass focussed) may be "fun" to someone and a bright phone may be "fun" to someone else. To help my point, I ask the question -"if a headphone can be fun, can another be sad?" I think not.

Having said that, if you aren't getting any "fun" from your cans, it is time to try another fon. It is all in the music.
