Unlike Ellington, which I think requires the full orchestra, Basie worked really well at smaller sizes. These are from the 50s.

I'd never heard of Phosphorescent - a.k.a. Matthew Houck - before last Friday. He was supporting The National at the O2 Academy in Glasgow and I thought he was very good. Support bands rarely grab my attention but this set did. I'd highly recommend it. The National were superb, as you might expect. What was surprising to me was just how much they've developed since I last saw them maybe 3 years ago. Their stage presence is now pretty slick and they've clearly been making some money because the lighting was fantastic!

Just picked up NIN Pretty Hate Machine remaster... pretty good so far

I played the remaster CD about three times this evening before I thought, 'hang on...' I've the original on CD as well, let's do a quick a-b. That's when you appreciate that the remaster isn't just some boosted brick wall abomination, but probably the sound Trent had in his head the first time around. IMO of course.
