After knowing about them in my periphery for a few years, I finally dove into the catalog of Silver Apples recently. They were a late-'60s psychedelic pop group that relied upon early homebuilt synths instead of guitars to produce their signature sound. The duo's frontman, Simeon, designed an entire tabletop electronic music rig based on oscillators and telegraph equipment, which was augmented by a sort of proto-disco drumming style from Danny Taylor. They're one of those weird groups who were incredibly ahead of their time, but who never gained enough notoriety to become influential. Today, I'm listening to their first album, which is clearly a document of artistic experimentation more than it is an attempt to create an accessible pop record. Their second album, Contact, was more palatable, but its album art resulted in a lawsuit from Pan Am Airlines that drove the band to bankruptcy and killed their career.
