This release has long been considered Thelonious Monk's acknowledgement to the flourishing youth-oriented subculture from whence the collection takes its name. Certainly the Grammy-winning cover - which depicts Monk as a World War II French revolutionary toting an automatic weapon - gave the establishment more than the brilliant swinging sounds in the grooves to consider.

Underground (1968) became Monk's penultimate studio album, as well as the final release to feature the '60s quartet: Charlie Rouse, Ben Riley, and Larry Gales.

Hocus Pocus was a Dadaist explosion of creativity (because of acid or not, we'll never know), while Beyond the Realms of Death was one of the first songs in popular music to talk about killing yourself; in fact, a family accused Halford of including pro-suicide subliminal stuff in another cut off the album. Its powerful riff was done first by their drummer, Les Binks.

Now perhaps I understand why the other version of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" I had come across was despised, because, although the previous version was a textbook interpretation, here it gives a textbook lesson, giving new life even to the well-known "Wedding March".

Magick Brother & Mystic Sister - Magick Brother & Mystic Sister (2020). Second ode to local music, this time with the Canterbury sound.

I'm confused. Why does the pic show mammoth but the description states Trailkill. I have that track in my library and a few playlists. They kill, but am I unaware of Thrailkill and Mammoth being the same band? Also, when they quiet down some, they really have a scale the summit sound.
I think it’s just the way it’s tagged on Bandcamp. But I do believe Trailkill is the same trio that was Mammoth just under a new name. May be wrong on that

Extremist . Demon Hunter.jpg

Extremist (Deluxe Edition) . Demon Hunter

A few months ago I purged most of my metal collection. Only around ten albums remained and life is better now. Music has failed as a political force, but its lasting effects on the individual are real. Many metal bands operate under questionable motives. ‘Blackness’ is exhilarating, but could it be a rotten deal for the listener? For me the answer has become an unequivocal “Yes”. Demon Hunter is one of my metal discoveries after leaving the harmful stuff behind. Feels good to participate in a war-like experience without the drain.
