By complete accident, I became the first person in Chicago to buy a physical copy of the latest Twin Shadow album this morning. As a result, I now have free tickets to his show at Metro next month and something to do with my Friday night that week. All in all, today is going well so far.

Somewhat genre-defying - with roots in black metal, they've added melodies, the occasional synthesizer and some strings, a vocal you can actually listen to - resulting in an eerily beautiful and atmospheric album.

My native Norwegian is similar enough to Icelandic to let me get the gist of the lyrics on casual listening - I guess I'll have to listen more carefully and take notes and ask an Icelandic acquaintance of mine for some assistance one of these days.

Anyway - truly a beautiful album.

I'm so glad to see this post! One of my great finds last year. There is a growing brand of metal (all you Opeth fans out there) from groups that either started in metal or have some kind of roots therein, but really transcend description (Jesu, Earth, OM, Alcest, Boris, etc.) that really should appeal to the greater rock fan base.

Of the many non-English rock/metal albums I have (Enslaved's Frost album, Boris, Alcest, Kvelertak, Drudkh, Korpiklaani, Moonsorrow), this album is one of the most beautiful, emotive albums I've heard. It is so melancholic and sad...not easy to do when you don't understand the lyrics. And, I don't think it matters. It's a gorgeous album.

Last year, I also fell in love with Wovenhand's Refractory Obdurate. Not really metal, but ran across this album on some end of the year lists. One of those genre splicing kind of releases which doesn't fit into a box but is just a great rock album. Sort of folk inspired twangy post punk, post rock, dark rock/metal hybrid of somethin' awesome. The Cult meets Bod Dylan and the Band....not sure, but for me this was also one of the best rock releases last year:

I love Avett.  I love Elliott.  I didn't love this as much as I was hoping to.
