I took the Pepsi plunge with this bad boy and I'm glad I did. I came to Mehdlau as a rock fan really who has always liked the jazz fusion of Pat Metheny. Mehdlau and Metheny did two very nice collaborations-we're talking modern jazz guitar and piano.

This is a 7 disc set of Mehdlau's well received "Trio" discs released from 96-2001. There were five original releases. In 2011-he offered the entire series as a box set. Number 5 is a double disc and he throws in an extra disc of unreleased material. It's a combination of studio and live performances.  7 discs, over 7 hours of music! Just over $30 on Amazon.

I was just looking for some nice piano jazz from a contemporary artist. Beautiful mixture of standards, originals and interpretation's of well known rock songs including The Beatles Blackbird and Radiohead's Exit Music (for a movie). His jazz is clearly influenced by classical playing-it's serious music but very accessible for someone like me. I find it stands up extremely well to my limited collection of Dave Brubek, Monk and Bill Evans, etc.

It's a lot to digest-but beautiful.

What a fun, funky, jazz fusion album! Big influence on early hip hop, too.
