Westone UM3X Thread

Yes, sold them and got the ES3X and, like you, really liked the W3 sound with the soft grey tips - had no sibilance issues, btw. Before that I sold my SE530's to get the W3, a wise move for me, anyway.

You sold the W3s, I presume. I do really like their sound, except for the fact that I have to EQ the highs a bit with the tri-flanges. Keeping my eye on the UM3X thread, for future reference.

You could sell your W3 (300 aprox.) and get the UM3X (FreqCity is offering a good deal to its customers. You would only need to add a few bucks). I might be selling my IE8 soon. I'll keep them a couple of weeks for comparison purposes vs. UM3X. If I don't like the UM3X sound I'll be selling them asap.

Thanks, I'll figure something out soon enough. Not in a hurry.

I agree that IE8 is warm sounding. I even thought it was dark before burn in.
UM3x Doesn't sound warm in comparison to IE8.

Thanks, that's exactly what I wanted to know. I forgot to ask if you'd mind rating the UM3X as warmer or cooler than the W3, no rush though. Just trying to keep myself entertained with all the info until mine show up

Which one are you rooting for, soozieq? Warmer or cooler? (Just curious.)

I also have a question about going unamped with the UM3X. What is the hiss level when used with an iPod (preferably the 160gb Classic or 5th gen) when using the headphone out. I used to own the UM2 and there was a noticeable hiss during quiet passages or with no music playing. I get no hiss with my PFE's, so I'd like to know what to expect with these new Westones.
. . .

I did hear a hiss with the UM2's but only before music started, not during quiet passages. No hiss so far with UM3X using 6 gen 160 gig iPod or 2nd Gen Nano

I hear a hiss using the um3x and a 160g ipod classic. It is very quiet (maybe 50dB), and only noticeable when no music is playing.

The same as the W3 or slightly cooler, but definitely not warmer.

Man that picture sure shows how small the UM3X is.... Still trying to decide if I like the clear shell though.

I think it UM3X IS warmer because the bright and (somewhat) harsh-sounding treble on W3 is toned down on the UM3X.

FYI - Clear on one side only and solid black on the other.

Better way of putting it is UM3X has more realistic and natural Treble response than W3. Westone is quite rightly recommending W3 for recorded music listening.
I do not think UM3X has better soundstage than IE8 though.
