All these posts should be taken with a grain of salt. It is widely understood that fitament on universals is a very individual and subjective thing.

so are the star tips worse than the original silicone tips the 4 comes with? i just recently bought a set of the true fit and stars, only interested in the stars though, i dont like foam or comply style tips....i hope the tips are slightly better or as good as the factory silicone tips

Fit is very important as is the shape of the ear canal. Only comply worked for me on the W4, just like the OP described. All the other tips reflected too much sound and resonated in ways I did not like. Comply is probably the purest sound from the earphone. All the other tips react to the sound waves in larger degrees and reflect them. That's why they do sound-proofing with foam, not silicone : )

Edit: Notice I said most pure, not most accurate. As live sound coming in to your ear must reflect some as well. Who knows which tip is most accurate. But to me with my ear canals, comply sounded best.

All individuality aside, the star tip should theoretically be superior to the other silicone tips because the exit hole is larger and the flange part is longer being more forgiving on more different sizes of ears.

Star tips don't work we'll with the W4 acoustically, reverse horn effect. Works really well with the W2 though (green and black). Best W4 tips acoustically are the Phonak silicone tips and Shure Olives

Comply tips, Stars tips, ...and so on! W4 is realy Tips Dependant IEM!!

The SMO (Sony Hybrid mod) work fine for me but... have find another similar alternative that shake my head a bit more!  Maybe you'l love it either!

I call this Code: PA747A Mod.

I dont want to detailed here all the SMO procedures, almost  Headfiers here knows already!

Simple, all you need is 2 things.

* The plastic Tube (core), from any old, or unused foamy tips, or some silicone stems from tri-flanges.

** And finally, a pair of "SHURE PA749A Soft Flex Sleeves" (for E2 and Quiet Spot)
(There coming from my old deceded E2c)

Sony Hybrid sleeve [M] is to small & thin  (IMO) It's so why am using now the Shure Mod! I will eventualy go for some Phonack and Monster Mod.

Keep me informed about your opinions,  the sound test you did with!

Bonne chance!

EAGLES - Hotel California live ( Hell Freezes Over album)   AWESOME!

Tips of the triks!
*  Before inserted your final work, coat lightly the noozle with some... your personal favorite grease... from your fronthead, nose or any kind of body grease.
You can either use "Oto-Ease" if your out of sebum!

** Open you mouth  a bit before inserted in your canal will help!

This was my grain of salt!

No, data is going to prove this.

There's certain tips that just don't work with the W4 to bring out the most out of them, these are some and long tips, no long tips will work

There is only data that would be measurable specific to your ear anatomy. How do you not get that? Do you take the same stance with that on W2 and W3 as well since nozzle length is identical to W4?

It also depends on sound preference you are looking for. I much preferred the more open and spacious sound with the longer P series comply on W3 versus the much more closed in "wired to the brain" sound of my UM56 customs.

Yep! Better than the original tips! You will like these new version! I have test all of them, except for the Phonak and Monster mod!

It's based on the average ear, luckily you only need to get 3mm away from the reference plane so fit isn't hard at all to simulate, just go as deep as the housing can go, unless you can really only do 6mm, but i think 99% are fine. The acoustics of the W2 are completely different, Phonaks are horrid on the W2. Phonaks and Olive tame the 10k spik well while keeping its bandwidth to 20k on the W4 only few tips can do this.

i hoping the star silicone are better than the original silicone tips...im not a fan of the foam or comply's becuase of their tenancies to muffle or veil the mids and highs. i do like their comfort though.
