So with 10 days left, Watchmen is slated to hit the UK and USA on March 6th (03-06-09). And with that, comes the question:

Who's planning on watching Watchmen? Anyone have thoughts, either good or bad about the upcoming film based on what we know about it already?

I for one am bummed because I head for work on March 2nd and won't be able to see a movie in theaters from then for 3 whole weeks. Unless the movie is a real stinker, it should still be in theaters when I get back, but unfortunately, I'll be missing opening night.

Personally, I think it'll turn out to be fairly solid as comic book/graphic novel adaptations go. There are a few things I wish were in the Theatrical Cut, but I can wait to see them in the Director's Cut. And I know there's been a lot of back-and-forth between fans and detractors over Snyder's change to the ending of the graphic novel, but I'll reserve judgement on how well or poorly his new ending works until I've actually seen it and seen it in the context of the movie.

So anyone else wish to post their thoughts?

I am going to see it, but I am really angry about the ending. There is no reason to change it.

I read the book, didn't really enjoy it. But then again, I'm not really a comic fan. I liked V for Vendetta though(both film and comic). I probably won't see the film until it comes out on video.

I agree. Going to watch it and hoping that is captures atleast 50% of the original cartoon feeling, if it does that, I'm satisfied.

Is the graphic novel worth reading? It's being promoted heavily at the bookstore I frequent. I've never been able to "get into" a comic or graphic novel before. However, this seems pretty well reviewed and I was thinking it might be fun to read it and then go see the movie. What do you guys think?

Same here. I am sorry to hear that the ending was changed, but if Snyder's new ending works out, then I'll call it a good adaptation and be happy.

I was never one to really get into comic books either, but after my sister fell in love with V For Vendetta (the film), I bought her the graphic novel as well and found it to be a pretty good read. The fact that V For Vendetta and Watchmen are written by the same author (Alan Moore), is what drove me to try it out, and I have to say I was extremely satisfied and preferred it over the former. It reads very well and very intelligently as well, and it's the Graphic Novel that started me on my current collection of them. I'd say give it a shot.

The info on what has been changed is fairly widespread on the internet now, but since you ask:

Spoiler Begins: (This is entirely for the benefit of people who wish to read the novel and remain surprised)
The ending in the novel in which Veidt uses the cloned human psychic brain transplanted into the squid-monster and uses it as an alien threat to launch an 'attack' on New York that brings about a temporary world peace of sorts and prevents a Nuclear War was modified by Snyder. The monster and the plan leading up to it is replaced with a new plan by Veidt that ends up using a weapon that mimics Manhattan's Power Signature to similar effect.
Spoiler Ends

I recommend reading the novel. It's surprisingly intelligent and being a comic it uses literary techniques completely unavailable for any other sort of novel (or media for that matter) such as two stories running at the same time, pictures reflecting text and so on. The arguments and discussions are also very actual and in my opinion interesting. Each character is also very well done. Especially Rorschach.

I receieved the book for Christmas, and it was awesome. I'd never really read a graphic novel before, and it was a lot of fun. The storyline, writing, characters, and intertwining plots were all superb. I'm not sure how the movie will turn out, but I'll probably download it.

I think changing the psychic squiddy will not be a big deal - I do not think it is necessary to get the same effect... Leaving out the pirate story is fine - maybe they could add an animated version in an extended DVD. As long as all the events in the comic involving Rorschach are carried over to the movie exactly - then I will be content.

I loved it and I had never read a single comic before. I think that it is definitely worth reading. It is a quick read, and brings up some interesting thoughts. I felt like it was trying too hard to be "deep" at points, but overall it was fun and some of the artwork is just fantastic. One thing I really didn't like was the somewhat meta substory with the comic book pirate guy. Anyone who's read it will know what I mean. They did cut that though, so I am happy bout that.
