The Alpha dogs have massive pads kind of like the XL pads which gives them a really smooth and silky sound.

but the difference is the pads for the alpha dogs were the intended earpads, as in thats how they wanted it to sound
 
no matter what the original pads were the "intended" sound from val and vmoda.  it did take a year for them to design and release it so i'm sure val and the crew did the best they could to make it sound as close to the original as possible(again the "intended sound". if you like the xl pad, thats just a preference thing now

In the end I think the defining factor of the M100 (besides design/build) is the bass and it sounds better to me with the original pads. I guess the constraint of the standard pads help to make it tight and punchy sounding. Tonality of vocals and treble airyness seems a little better on XL but original isn't too far off.
 
I general they sound quite a bit more natural than my sold ATH-M50X which had a slight tinny blockyness to the vocals and treble. M100 has a smooth sparkly "zing" to it IMO

M50X was busier in 2-6khz I think, might be more detailed and linear there but not as smooth sounding.
