I just grabbed a Yamaha CTX-S90 Preamplifier/Tuner at the thrift. It has a headphone out on it. Just wanted to know your opinions on using this preamp as a dedicated headphone amp, and what I should expect?

Well, I don't know the Yamaha CTX-S90 Preamplifier/Tuner but I wouldn't get overly excited

Often the headphone outputs added to those is a bit of an afterthought and not great.

I might very well be wrong however, so I guess the only way to find out is to check it out for yourself.

There might be someone else here who knows of this particular preamp/tuner.

Do you have a pair of headphones handy? Give it a try and let us know. If it sounds good to you, I'm sure others would like to know. Also, Yamaha has built some fine tuners, so hook up an antenna and try that, too.

I'm currently using a PS Audio PCA-2 preamp to drive my D7000s and I have to admit it sounds pretty darn good. Was previously using an elekit tube amp, but this preamp made me realize that the D7000s really need a solid state amp to come alive. Have you tried out the Yamaha?
