I have HD595 and uDAC2-HP running from my macbook air.

i want to upgrade the DAC and get a headphone amp sometime too (eyeing the ODAC+O2 combo for down the road possibly)

but should I upgrade cans first or the DAC?

Also considering HD650 over HD600 but doesn't seem worth the $100 price increase.

Most people say cans first.

And I tried Audio Technica A900x even though they were closed because Best Buy has a good return policy, and they seemed great quality especially for closed and against my gut impulse, but they make my ears sweat after a few minutes and that head clamp isnt' sturdy enough. Plus, the sound is better from weak sources like iPhone audio out than HD595 but that's probably because of the lower ohms.

I think I can get Hd600 for a great deal from dakmart since they are somewhat nearby and I can pick it up in person.

Mostly listen to electronic, some rock but mostly electronic and a bit of all.

This looks like an interesting topic.
Are you sure you want hd600 over hd650 ? They are more about personal preference than which one is better and have you considered the Fiio e17+e09k?

If you are satisfied with your current headphone I think you should get an amp/dac. But the difference won't be HUGE, instead subtile and pleasing, for me at least. The beauty of audio at those prices is about perfecting, and a little improvement gives me the feeling of getting closer to the perfect sound.

I just got HD650's!

Also going to continue to use my udac2-hp for a while, and paired with a ra1 4556 cmoy 2x9v altoid tin amp that should be here in a few days. very excited!

first amp.

Eventually, I'll get probably oDAC+O2 and just be done with it!

now to sell my HD595's. the 650's sound much clearer and more impressive, even just driven from my udac2. Though I can't wait it to get better and better as my source improves over time (and throwing more money at it, might be sooner rather than later)

No harm in selling off my hd650 included 1/4" to 1/8" right? I bought the grado one when I had 595's and seem to be doing the trick. Plus I have no idea where the pesky original 1/4" to 1/8" is from 595, didnt like it.

I just looked at them side by side and they seem identical.

Maybe ill sell my HD595 with the grado just to keep my HD650 consistent :)
