Looks like Japan has a different version of UM Mext without the golden logo

I did ask Unique Melody if there would be different tunings released of the MEXT and they categorically said no. Would be disappointed if this was the case.

what dac/amp do you guys use to maximise MEST satisfactorily. i'm on a lookout for a combo

I (and another Head-Fi member I know) are both using iFi's Gryphon DAC/Amp with the MEST Mk II.
Both of us think it takes it up a level, and if you are into your bass, you can always engage the X-Bass function on the Gryphon and it gives the MEST Mk II bass that competes with basically anything out there (Legend X, Evo, etc).
The Gryphon has quite a few switches that let you tailor the sound, and it achieves these effects through hardware, rather than digital signal processing, for a more seamless and natural feel without any glaring inconsistencies.

Just my view of course, but hope this helps
PS: for what it's worth, I pair the Gryphon with either a Sony WM1Z or ZX300, but any DAP would work I think.

I honestly believe Mest 2 is superb. I’ve recently used it with smartphone > chord Mojo2 + Poly streamer. Mojo2 was a game changer with its immense transient detail combined with its lossless EQ. Admittedly I’d always boost bass and some treble but once I’d done so the sound was dreamlike.

My Mest Indigo is indeed much better but mostly in terms of separation + some bass enhancement + some sparkle.

The EQ of Mojo2 really allowed those Mest 2 to flourish

Started with the W2 then moved to the Shanling M6 pro 21 and Oriolus BA300S with the Mest Mkii. With the Indigo using the DENAFRIPS ARES II and xDuoo TA-20 with Hytron 12BH7 tubes.
The Indigo is used in a home setup and mest mkii portable.

Look it's a good fight.
Definitely indigo, found the right tips (for me JVC Spiral Dot ++), is the most "balanced", the most universal, while maintaining a high level of dynamics and low as I like it .
You listen to us almost everything with great satisfaction at very high levels. Noble Sultan and Aroma Thunder have a slightly higher dynamic impact and an even more impactful bass. They are more sectorial with higher levels on some genres (Sultan on pop jazz and fusion, more universal aroma than Sultan but amazing on and rock / metal).
I think I'll only keep two in ear and have to decide which one to sell, however Indigo I think is unsellable ... it has a very unique overall balance...

To date I have listened to Indigo with Effect Audio Evo 10 cable, excellent with Noble Sultan but very bad with Indigo.
With Penon Osg Indigo cable it sounds good (especially on metal rock because it loses detail and becomes a more '' ignorant '' headphone) but loses refinement and headstage.
With the cables I own (to tell the truth few and of the medium-low range) today indigo sounds better with its original Pwa Copper M3 cable.
The indigo lead also sounds very good with Aroma Thunder
