Ultrasone Pro 900 Impressions Thread
Feb 29, 2012 at 7:56 AM Post #4,264 of 5,992
I've been listening to some D2000s over the last year with an RSA Predator DAC/Amp, recently decided i wanted to upgrade and was considering the Pro 900... I feel like I'm seeing too many posts where people are comparing the sound quality of these cans to the D2000 and either prefer the D2000 or at least feel they sound extremely similar. Is this concern unwarranted? I'd hate to get these only to find I just paid about $320 (going used) for the same set of headphones I essentially already have.

Also, does anyone have any opinion on how these sound with the RSA Predator?

I think you would be disappointed with the Pro900. The Denons are better all-rounders, capable of handling a wider range of music genres. The Pro900 excels at a few specific genres but overall isn't that versatile. I find it to be excellent for bass-orientated electronic genres where vocals are not that important.

Of course, this is all IMO and without trying them for youself you will never really know.

+1.

I don't own the D2000 so I won't talk about them... I only listened to them a few hours and want some but not to REPLACE the Pro900, but to compliment them. They are often compared but to my ears they didn't sound the same at all (Pro900 - recessed mids, S-Logic, mid-bass). Like said above, I did buy the Pro900 for my electronic music addiction going on right now and I love them for that, but for the rest, I want the D2000 (well D5000) now too. Hurray for empty wallets.

Well, I could perhaps shed some light on it.

Yes, the Pro 900 has a little more recessed mids than the D2000. They compliment eachother pretty good.

In short:

- Pro 900 has a tad bit more bass
- Pro 900 is not especially forgiving at all

- Pro 900 is a little aggressive
- D2000 is laidback

- D2000 is a little more allround
- D2000 has a little larger soundstage

I have used this analogy before: The D2000 will serve everything on a silver platter. The Pro 900 serves good audio on a platinum platter and poor audio in the toilet. If the D2000 is gently stroking your cheek, the Pro 900 will throw a jaw breaking fist.

Thanks for the response guys. Seems like I have to get these. The majority of the music I listen to is electronic, especially lately. Here's a sample of what I would likely be listening to on these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTjV7Pr7BrM&hd=1 and other similar, deep, dark type dubstep... i've been listening to a little house lately too. I think it's house... I dunno. Anyway, hopefully I can find some of these on the used board sometime soon. What's the going rate for a pair of use Pro 900s? $320?

Just listened to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVg6OaKTTxI&hd=1 for the first time on my D2000s... It was incredible. If these Pro 900s are really made for that particular sound, I imagine I'm going to love these things.

got em earlier, been listening to aviici @ pier 94 and some other house for the past couple of hours, these things are sick, i got em paired with fiio e7 right now which seems to be providing more than enough juice for them although i do plan on upgrading to the e17 when i get the chance, with all that being said, they are rocking my brain right now

I think you're going to like Pro 900 more than D2000 for electronica. I haven't heard D2000, but I own D5000 and Pro 900 is the one I use the most, (well, only headphone I use now since the right driver broke on D5000).
They are quite different headphones, and Pro 900 is the most fun to listen to, especially for electronica.
It's known that D2000/D5000 has more sub-bass and Pro 900 has more mid-bass, but Pro 900 isn't far behind in the sub-bass region and has a greater punch whereas D5000 sounds more bloated.
The song you linked sounds awesome by the way, and that's only on Youtube!

In your opinion, as far as electronic music is concerned will I be losing out a whole lot if most my electronic music collection is in either V0 or 320? I know FLAC would obviously be preferable, but I'm wondering how much will really be lost there. All my prog rock and music with real instruments is in FLAC, for some reason I've always assumed V0 or 320 would be just find for electronica... now that I'm looking into a pair of headphones that apparently isn't very forgiving I'm a bit concerned about my decision to do that.

V0 or 320 mp3 works just fine for me with most electronic music I've tried. Much more forgiving than poor rock or metal recordings.

I only listen idm, techno, ambient, dub, etc.. and with the pro 900 there is not any problem with mp3 files, for me with electronic music (also in downtempo) is fantastic. Also with old electronic music like Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk and Cluster.

I can only agree with that. I've said it before: I think the unforgiving nature of the Pro 900 is not bound to genres or bitrates, but with the mastering. Most music that is mastered properly doesn't sound bad with the Pro 900 no matter the genre or bitrate. Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk sounds really good on the Pro 900 imo.

Completly offtopic... but since I own the Pro900s, anytime I read a group suggestion, I tend to look it up...
I checked Tangerine Dream at work using my friend Google and ended up on a ugly local pornstar's web page... very fun... hehe
