Honestly - I would buy a better cartridge before upgrading the TC-750. If you like the sound of the 2M Red, get a 2M Bronze. It's a MUCH better cartridge. I know from personal experience. I had the Bronze, and bought a Red just to compare. The Red is nice for the price, but the Bronze is far superior. I ended up getting a 2M Black for my Pioneer PL-530, as I do like the 2M sound.

+1. TC -750 is surprisingly quite decent phono preamp, you will get far more by upgrading the cartridge -or stylus alone. I agree Bronze is the best bang for the buck in 2M line, but I am not sure if Red cart accepts Bronze stylus in physical terms. Red/Blue cartridge body is inferiour to Bronze/black cartridge body, so Red cart/Bronze stylus combo would be inferiour to full Bronze, but the bulk of the improvement is in the stylus.

Iv been waiting for a review on the Ortofon 2M PNP Headshell but the Bronze is one of the cartridges im looking at.
$400ish w/shell or $310ish.

http://www.ortofon.com/products/cartridges/cartridges-2m-series/2m-bronze

  2M Headshell feautures:

  1. Universal mount fitting a wide range of tonearms
  2. The headshell body is manufactured from a special compound used for Medical industry, ensures high rigidity while reducing unwanted vibration
  3. Elegant hi-tech design
  4. Length 52mm. Headshell with a 2M cartridge pre-mounted provides correct Baerwald alignment with Ortofon TA-110/210, likewise with the major part of tonearms with universal mount
  5. Weight 16,9g, weight with a 2M cartridge pre-mounted 23g
  6. Exclusive plug-and-play solution

AT oc9 mkII is one of the others im looking at.
I still want to upgrade my preamp though.

Same here. I was just recently handed down a direct drive Technics SL-210 from a friend who upgraded to a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon. I have considered upgrading the cartridge on it to a 2m Red, but I'm wondering if one of Ortofon's separate headshells (i.e. the Ortofon SH-4) be a better option than the 2m PNP?

The only issue I have currently is that I am in need of a phono preamp to be able to listen to it. I'm thinking about going the vintage receiver/amp route, but does anyone have any recommendations for a good phono preamp for the money?

The 52mm length is where it needs to be for technics but the weight is a little heavy with the pnp headshell.
SH-4 with a 2M Cartridge is 16.6g vs 2M PNP being 23g.

That's almost the weight of two 2M cartridges on a SH-4 headshell.

Reading the Ortofon website says the two would be a good match. Would it be too heavy for the Technics SL-210 turntable?

EDIT: Thank you, tattare for helping me decide. I think I will go for a 2m red Ortofon with the SH-4 headshell.

So does anyone have any experience with the Kab phono preamp parameter calculator.  (kabusa.com at bottom of phono preamp page)

so the Ortofon 2M red has a 5.5mV output according to ortofon but a issue of hi-fi news measures it at 6.6mV
& im trying to match it with a TCC TC-750  http://www.phonopreamps.com/tc750pp.html

but even with googling for hours on end i still have no idea what im looking for.

current setup technics 1200 + 2m red > tcc tc-750 > burson soloist sl and it just sounds super loud, muddy, harsh and ...yea it just sounds horrible.
hooked to the peachtree dac-it I can use the volume knob on the soloist but the TCC to the soloist you have to turn the knob almost all the way down.

is the answer attenuators or just replace the cheap phono preamp?  Changing the cart out or a Bronze/black it would still be 5mV.

Edit: nvm I guess.   I think i just had a few badly recorded vinyls spinning.
http://youtu.be/fJ9EOG6ues4  <--  it sounded like that & late registration is the last album I was spinning when I was complaining.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdjcnADtpLQ same pressing with a Dynavector.

Tech n9ne - something Else & Guns N roses - use your illusion II sound just fine.

The UTurn Orbit Kickstarter got delayed to November due to supplier quality issues... I'm dying...

Atleast they care about quality. Most of their problems with suppliers are because they reached 400% above their goal and need much more than they expected so suppliers are either cutting corners, QC or simply can't meet demand. The Kickstarter dropped in Janurary.

Kind of wished I just bought the Debut Carbon instead..
I suppose that feeling will change when I actually get my Orbit~

The wait is worse than waiting for college acceptance letters.. (which is kind of sad lol)

I was curious about U Turn TT - checked their website minutes before your post, it says  shipping of the basic MDF platter model started September 5th. Otherwise, as you posted.

I hope the wait will be worth it - they are obviously clever enough to not compromise the quality, as it would have backfired - badly. Rega and Project are tough nuts to crack to begin with.

I almost bought a U-Turn during the kickstart phase just for grins...but I have 4 turntables as it is, which is one too many, in that one of the four almost never gets used - I "only" have three stereos :D

You are a well restrained
L3000.gif
man when it comes to TTs ...

BTW, no double phono inputs on your preamps &/or receivers to accomodate the 4th TT ? For mono, 78 or "scout listening" to garage sales/flea market etc LP finds that might pose a damage treat to some seriou$
