An Earthquake hit (8.3) close to American Samoa. They have not identified the direction yet. For anyone in the area, stay dry and good luck.

If it was headed toward Hawai i, it would be there about now. Checking the Hawai i site has a projected time of 1:10 pm local time if it went in that direction. I also heard (FOX) that Aukland NZ was under a watch. Initial measurements indicated a 3-4 m in Am. Samoa. So far, no deaths reported.

Yes and under that much water, depending on any floor shifts, could be a strong wave or it could dissipate in the Pacific basin.

I'm in Wellington at the moment so it looks like I'll be safe. They've evacuated low areas of waikato afaik. Expected to hit at around 11 (7 minutes). Hopefully it wont be as disastrous as the quake.

Edit: Tsunami warning for Waikato is cancelled. Around 20 people killed in the Samoan quake and whole villages leveled. Small tsunami's have hit in Samoa also.
