einolu - I guess we just have different tastes. My opinions on the bands you mentioned are almost completely opposite. Although I do enjoy Amon Tobin, I think if anything his music is more repetitive than anything from Thievery Corp. [and I am not too familiar with faithless]

strohmie and adhoc - good call with hooverphonic and daughter darling

A couple of lesser known trip hop artists that I forgot:
the controls
heed
kemopetrol
khromozomes
market
[they are all old favourites, but I've never been able to find their CD's for purchase

Fernanda Porto is very nice as well... not Trip Hop, more drum'n'bossa

[great to pick up if you like lamb and dont mind singing in a foreign language]

Velvet Chain, an indie band, has been one of my favorite Trip-hop bands for two years now. Check them out at: www.velvetchain.com - free mp3 downloads are available.

I heard a couple of albums by Boards of Canada while browsing various people's iTunes shared libraries at work (a large company, so plenty to browse) that really got my attention...I ended up ordering them online (128K MP3s through iTunes just doesn't cut it) and like them even better in FLAC format.

Boards of Canada
-----------------
Music Has the Right to Children
In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country (CD single)
Geogaddi

Another discovery was Groove Armada (Goodbye Country Hello Nightclub), though it's a bit different (more hop, less trip) than Boards of Canada.

Most of the stuff mentioned is good. Let's see what I can contribute...

Goldfrapp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The first album, Felt Mountain, is like Portishead.
The new album, Black Cherry is amazing....I can't even discribe it.

Another band, I don't think it's trip-hop, but is good is Curve. Check out the albums "Come Clean" and "Gift". It's harder electronic with awsome female vocals by Toni Haliday.

Might have been mentioned, but Hooverphonic is good

The best Morcheeba album is Big Calm

There is a new albim out called Jem - Finally Woken...not bad

some less known ones are Moa, Lhooq, Ollano and Supreme Beings of Leisure

Radio Iodine - Tiny Warnings...more rock than electronic, but good

Try these out for good beats...(some big beat, electronica and down-tempo)
Lunatic Calm - Metropol
Meat Beat Manifesto - anthing by them
Death in Vegas - Dead Elvis
Fight Club soundtrack by the Dust Brothers
Propellerheads - Decksanddrumsandrockandroll (This is a must have, as priviously mentioned)
Junkie XL - Saturday Teenage Kick
BT - Movement in Still Life
Fila Brazillia - Touch of Cloth
Purple Penguin - Questions
Headrillaz - Coldharbour Rocks
Bentley Rhythm Ace
Subphonic - Vega Beach party

You have probably heard of all these guys, but it's good stuff

Later,
Mike

Holy crap, lots of artists I didn't know about even after weeks of researching trip-hop.

Keep the recommendations coming, I'll be looking into all of them. And feel free to include "Alternative" artists too, I know it's not trip-hop or electronic, but that's the only other genre of music I can get into.

As for the two CDs I mentioned ordering, got them the other day. Wow. Both excellent discs. Halou's Wiser is more "trip" and Ambient than anything else. Deeply affecting music. And Laika's Sounds of the Satellites, loaded with atmosphere, great songwriting, and solid composition. Both highly recommended, artists like these deserve more attention than the limelight-stealing acts that are Massive Attack, Portishead, and Tricky. Not saying they're bad, it's just that they get far too much attention while everyone else doesn't.

I'll be adding the rest of Massive Attack's CDs to my collection anyway, as well as Dummy & Portishead, and maybe Maxinquaye. After all you can't have a trip-hop collection without the pioneers.

Looking forward to Massive Attack's Danny the Dog OST, anyone else here too?

'Danny the Dog' is ok but sounds like a typical OST. ie, works better within the context of the film.

Not a great album. Mediocre at best...

I'm not usually big on compilation albums, but the Hi-Fidelity Lounge series is excellent. I have 1, 2 & 4 and am continually blown away. They're very good.

dZihan & Kamien are also must have's. Freaks & Icons was my favorite album for a while so I bought Grand Reservia and I'll be damned if it isn't even better. Check out Dropsphere & Airport... both great tracks.

Anything from Thievery Corp is good, those guys just play this game on a different level. It's what got me onto the Hi-Fi Lounge series (they have a track or 2 on there). They are to Electronica what Walter Payton was to professional football.

More to the ambient genre is the Freezone series done by DJ Morpheus. These are getting kinda tough to find. The first was my favorite in the series. The later albums aren't so good.

If it's just trip-hop Morcheeba, Portishead & Tricky are tough to beat.
