TRI earphone impressions - I4 and I3, Starlight, NEW Starsea

As always, it is a matter of taste, preference, but the Timeless did not captivate me as the TRI I3s and I3 Pros have and the I3s are, for me more coherent. The Timeless may not have captured by attention as much possibly because, one channel failed on my set of the Timeless, I sent them back to China and I got a replacement set, after some six to eight weeks, somehow I did not get back into the Timeless.

In terms of names, the I3s (both versions) are more deserving of the moniker, "timeless". They are, to my ears, more iconic in our hobby than the Timeless. I may be proven totally wrong with time, but that is my view.

I’m enjoying i3 pro too, although it’s a smaller one of planar that i3 Pro uses, but they got BA and DD for the back up, ended up pretty smooth set good for acoustic.

i3 Pro somehow reminds me of Moondrop’s KXXS tonality-wise, maybe because of the reverb handling, it has a unique veils that makes music euphoric.

Treble may be slightly north of treble sensitive group, in an exchange of vivid detail retrievals.

With this planar wave coming, if someone feeling single Planar lacks definition and articulation, and need the last niche of sub-bass’s extension, i3 Pro is something they could try IMO. It’s not a upgrade or substitution to Timeless etc, but some new taste.

Timeless got better resolution, and coherence overall, but i3 Pro got wider sound stage mainly contributed by BA, and dynamism by DD.
I can’t comment on the Timeless, but have you had the time properly break in your i3 ?

The recommendation is around 100 hrs. Link to my post

I probably only got 20hrs at most, wow 100 hours is a long run! OK, I’m gonna try burn-in i3 then

Agree with you bro. I didn't really like the Timeless, and much prefer the TRI I3 and I3 Pros to the Timeless.

Granted, the Timeless was released towards the end of 2021 and was the sparkplug for the current planar frenzy. It has superb resolution but has some deal breaking flaws for my own preferences:
1) Bad planar timbre
2) Zero soundstage depth (width is wide but depth is really lacking, making the music sound in a 2D plane)
3) Treble spikes
4) Fit issues

Anyway, the Timeless cannot be called "Timeless" anymore, since they released an AE version (AKA Pro version), which for all intents and purposes, smells a bit like a cashgrab (3 dB boost in bass, modular cable, but for $40 - 50 more).

No kidding. This is a fantastic set and it’s flown completely under the radar in the so-called planar wars.
Absolutely true. Everyone is making excited squeals about new planar hybrids. But they have ignored a really nicely done tribrid standing in the wings. It's really engaging to listen to. Warm syrupy and enveloping with delicate non-fatiguing treble, amazing mids and a fun bass. I guess none of that shows up on a FR graph! :triportsad:

Actually there is no big enough planar in IEMs. And as all we know planar could provide a wonderful and smooth mids, but only the planar in Headphones could provide very sweet and airy highs. TRI is very smart that they put a BA and a DD to back up, but the BA of i3Pros is in the tube so the soundstage of i3Pros is not as big as the old i3s, luckily i3Pros is better than i3s in many other ways.

Trying out the Tri Clearion tips on the tri i3 pro. Its a very interesting combination together with the kbear limpid pro cable. It changes the sound from warm thick slightly dark to a more DF very mid centric sound. However the characters of the drivers are still very much pressent the bass slam is still very strong but with much reduced decay making for snapier bass. Mids are still thick as if there is a upper bass boost but that only affects vocals and not instruments.

The highs are the ones I'm abit conflicted about, while its very coherent liquid like and has much better extension thanks to the tips it really shows that the I3 pro is a pretty low res with not much ability to do micro detail well.
That being said I dont think its a bad thing being a enjoyment first over chasing down every last detail. Its interesting how the BA actually sounds alot like DD treble with how smooth it is. A very good iem for listening to older questionablely mastered music since it has a very relexing tone that is very suitable for 80s rock, post metal and other chillex style music.
Also it still retains its dynamics so faster stuff like EDM and trashcore are also suitable generes for this iem.

Actually I think with the cable and tip roll it turned it from a specialised iem to a jack of all trades that I can pull out when I want that smoothness instead of all that detail being exposed with the Fiio FD7

it's crazy how much of the potential of the TRI I3 is unlocked with TRI Clarion tips, pure silver cable and a good DAC that synergizes with it and further boosts bass, mids, highs (e.g. CX31993 - Jcally JA3)

I had one side going mute after 30+ minutes or several hours (ear canal shape wise ?) - so removed the mesh and did the 3M micropore tape mod.

Revisiting the TRI I3 like this - the stage is quite HUGE and it feels larger than all the other IEMs I have - close to headphone, holographic-like experience

the bass is thumpy and precise, mids naturally planar awesome, the highs extended enough for good details yet somehow wishing for more.

It feels not really digital, sterile but analog, life-like - it got soul

Everything you throw at it seems to sound .. great :D

I used the Clarion tips on mine for a while. They work for me on the I3 Pro because of the longish stems. I switched to the TRN T tips yesterday and they work great too. They may be a bit darker than the Clarion though. I’m still using the stock cable, but I have a TRN T6 pure silver cable coming that I may try with these based on your comments. So far the only thing the I3 Pro seems to lack is a bit of treble extension.
