Let's say you're planning a trip overseas. You're going to backpack Europe and visit various US states. You need to bring some headphones. Isolation and minimal leakage are extremely important because you'll mostly be using them on planes and trains, but you don't want IEMs.

What headphones do you take?

M50's.  They would be pretty fantastic for this scenario.

And as another plus, they're heavy enough that they could, conceivably, be chucked at someone who was attempting to assault me.

I would take IEM's, honestly.

Headphones I would consider:
ATH-M50
DT770 / 80ohm (sometimes can be bought cheap < ~$100)
HFI-780

I would probably get the HFI-780 because I have been interested in buying these anyways.
There are also a bunch of other ultrasone headphones you could also consider.

I would go with IEMs, but they really irritate my ears after about 20 minutes.

I actually already have HFI-780s. I've had them for a couple of years. They're the only "good" headphones I've ever had. But I'm looking to try something new since they're wearing out... and mostly because I'm getting more into this whole headphone thing.

I can only find the 250ohm version of the DT770s locally. I'd probably need a portable amp for those, right?

If thats the case, why don't you keep the HFI-780's for travel and get a different pair for "trying something new"
You'll have better choices without "travel" as a constraint.

That's a really logical idea, although I was hoping for a bit better isolation. I can hear most people talking over my music with the HFI-780s. I'm worried about how that would go on an airplane.

Personally, I don't like (or never got used to) the warm and cramped sound of HD25 (or M50?). Thus, I would probably go with the Pro 750.

I would also consider the DT 1350 or Shure SRH 840 but I haven't heard them yet.
