The most likely calculation has little to do with whether sales are canabalized or not. Rather that Topping's sales channels are orders of magnitude more efficient than Holo's. Therefore holo hopes to make more by placing their tech inside a topping product than they will ever make placing it inside a holo product. It's a pretty obvious calculation, based on Topping's sales and marketing prowress vs.what holo on their own are capable of. So much so, that it's worth the possibility that they sell a few less cyan 2.
Yes, Holo did it to make money. No, it's unlikely that they would give their technology to Topping, their rival, so they could create a more functional, cheaper, and equally good-sounding = better Cyan 2. That’s not how business works, especially in such a competitive market. Now we know that the Centaurus is indeed sonically inferior due to cheaper internal components, such as the lack of galvanic isolation and a weaker power supply section. This makes sense, and I’d be very surprised if it turned out otherwise.

Businesses canibalize existing products all the tme in order to make money... especially in a competitive market. From some buyer's perspective the centaurus is a better, more full featured dac. Others will make a different calculation. But one thing is for sure, orders of magnitude more people will have heard of topping and it's much easier to buy topping products. I have created products that made hundreds of millions of dollars, and I know a lot about cannabalizing a niche product in order to get orders of magnitude more sales. It's done all the time.
I think we should go back to discussing how the centaurus sounds....
Exactly what I’m talking about. Some people think it's better because it’s more feature-packed. Others think the Cyan 2 is better due to superior SQ as they don't care about the Centaurus' features but appreciate the built-in galvanic isolation and LPS (myself included). These are two different devices for different target audiences. All I'm arguing is that it's not a coincidence.
Anyone see where to download Topping Tune for Mac? The manual ref V1.1 and mac compatible yet I cannot find it anywhere... only Windows version. Without it don't see EQ in menu and only PEQ but useless without the app... Also tried under win11 in Parallels, says not compatible yet it runs somehow.... love to find it for native mac.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I would like to know this as well. Hype train will probably say it’s much better. I probably should’ve bought it, but I just got a used musician Pegasus after seeing multiple reviews that highlighted it having the main traits I look for. I was shopping the A26 and R26 really hard too, but I have limited space. These smaller form factors seem a lot more practical.
I purchased the Centaurus last night and waiting for it to arrive. It was £799.99 in the UK but I found a 10% off discount code so paid around £720. Is it a perfect DAC at this price point? no, but it has features I want to explore such as onboard EQ, NOS mode (for upsampling in HQPlayer) and it is going to be (I hope) a considerable upgrade to my 15 year old Creative Sound Blaster X-FI Titanium HD sound card. The Cyan 2 is probably better (and reviews tend to confirm that), it has a cleaner signal/power but it has less features and also considerably more expensive in the UK (£1,165.00). The Centaurus was already breaking my budget, I just couldn't stretch out even more.
I am not sure if I am the only one with a Centaurus, but does anyone know how the "Best Mode" works in detail? Because unfortunatly the displays just shows the original sample rate and "Best Mode" but I would like to know what exactly the DAC is currently using.
I just got my Centaurus yesterday I noticed the same thing I really do not care much as I got the DAC for the NOS R2R sound but it would be nice maybe i will send a bunch of emails and make noise?..... First Hiccup came I had not yet plugged the Centaurus into my UPS backup lights flickered during a thunderstorm it corrupted the firmware acted like it was fine but would not output any sound had a heck of a time reflashing the firmware which it finally took it thought it was toast but it survived reminder to self do not be lazy
