Topping A30 Headphone Amplifier

How powerful is the Topping A30 Amp compared to the Schiit Magni 3?

I was thinking of getting the Magni 3 with Modi 2, but I am hearing SO MANY negative things about Schiit, and I've read so many people saying the pots are scratchy/noisy on the Magni 3.

Also hearing the D30 is a much better DAC than the modi...

Would the Topping A30 be ok with 600ohm headphones? How much is the A30 really holding the D30 back?

More or less from the specs of both amplifiers:

Schiit Magni 3

Maximum Power, 32 ohms: 2W RMS per channel
Maximum Power, 300 ohms: 430mW RMS per channel
Maximum Power, 600 ohms: 230mW RMS per channel

Topping A30
1551mW x 2 (PO=Hi, 6.35 output, RL=32Ω,THD+N=1%)
291mW x 2 (PO=Hi, 6.35 output, RL=300Ω,THD+N=1%)
152mW x 2 (PO=Hi, 6.35 output, RL=600Ω,THD+N=1%)

You can say Magni is more powerful at least on paper (electronic paper in this case). But also both amplifier are powerful enough to drive any 600 ohms headphone.

Excellent thanks, I was told that the amp might struggle with low impedance headphones, I think the lowest I have is 32 and I'm not really interested in IEM headphones.

It is $50 cheaper for me to get the A30/D30 combo compared to the Magni/Modi.

A30 does have a higher output impedance of ~10 ohms, just keep that in mind if you're using lower impedance cans.

I think the lowest impedance cans I have are the Grado MS1's (Great cans), Those are 32ohms.

Those would be fine with the A30?
The rule of thumb is no more than 1/8 output impedance to headphone impedance, so for your 32 ohm Grado's, the Schiit stack might be a better option.

Cool thanks for the info bud, i've been reading so many negative things about the crap magni though, scratchy pots...tons of people are complaining...not sure how normal this.

I run my PA2V2 Amp through my onboard audio that has a dedicated chip and when i turn the volume on this little amp I hear very little fuzzy-ness...and the amp can get crazy loud.

I found the D30/A30 stack to be a pretty sweet entry level purchase and only sold it as my cans outgrew my source. But I did run 250ohm DT770's through the stack. If you're in the US then the Schiit stack could be sent back within 15 days if you have issues?

I live on PEI, Canada and shipping here with the magni/modi is over $40 via fedex.

All kinds of Magni issues on reddit with noisy pots...lots of ppl complaining about the same issue and some are pretty bad I guess.

My PA2V2 amp seems to pump out lots of power, if the A30 is close to that I'd get the A30.

Or maybe the Topping D30 and my PA2V2 would be just fine....mind you my amp cost me $55 but it's no slouch.

A30 + Grados is fine in my personal opinion. I use mine with them all the time (symphones V8 build + SR60e build) and the sound is excellent.

Hi, I started the following thread about Topping A30 & HD 600: https://www.head-fi.org/threads/topping-a30-sennheiser-hd-600.876411
I used online headphone power calculators and as for the required power (mW) - everything is OK. But I cannot find info about Voltage (volts RMS) and Current (millamps RMS) for the Topping A30 - the specifications listed on their site do not include this information. Do you maybe have some info about that (Voltage [volts RMS] and Current [millamps RMS])? (I'm asking because I want to make sure that A30 is able to run HD 600 -to drive it at it's full potential).
