That's called recessed mids my friend, something that's inherenet in the DT990 sound signature.

Specifically, in the "presence" region around 5 KHz. It's the oldest psychoacoustic trick in the book, and one that just doesn't do it for me.
Looking at FR plots, it's also pretty clearly the explanation behind the AD700 soundstage. What I really want to sample at some point is the K701, which seems to give people the impression of spaciousness without, apparently, doing this. That intrigues me.

Bringing back this topic to life (instead of creating a new one ...). I want to know people opinion about the best headphones when you consider soundstage :). Thank you !

**** btw, I plan to buy a Grado GS1000e. It seems to have a pretty good soundstage while keeping this "fun" factor I prefer in headpones. ****

As of May 18th, 2018:

AKG K1000
Hifiman Shangri-La
Sennheiser HD800/HD800S
Stax SR-009
Audeze LCD-4
———————————
AKG K812

This top 5 is just the soundstage with everything properly amped, high-quality DAC and highly reliable source. If imaging by itself was factored in the rankings, the SR-009 and LCD-4 would be in the top 10 and Shangri-La in the Top 15, with the Sennheiser HE-1 (1), MrSpeakers VOCE (3), and AKG K812 (4) entering the top 5.

As for soundstage rankings from what I currently own:
ENIGMAcoustics Dharma D1000 with Hifiman velour ear pads
Hifiman HE-4
Sennheiser HD250 Linear I
Ultrasone Signature DJ
Stax SR-L500 (okay, I might upgrade my electrostatic amp later)
