Getting a pair of cans for music and gaming, both equally important!

Ok I purchase a Asus Xonar Essence STX.

Audition the following headphones and need your opinions on what I should be listening for when auditioning these headphones, or what materials I should use.

Currently I auditioned all the headphones below with a Cowon D2+ with no eq or jet effect settings. Though these cans will most likely be for home use with my Essence STX.

Materials were rock, alternative and at V0. Ingame footage made by me of Black Ops ~Vorcuta~ and Mass Effect 2 ~Shadow Broker's Base~

ATH-A700 : Tested it against the AD700 and thought it didn't fair well. Axed.

ATH-M50 : Tested it against the AD700, preferred the AD700. Sounded better than the ATH-A700. Axed.

ATH-AD700 : Like the sound stage. Overall sounds good but I notice that in vocals, especially in the 's' in "us", "soldiers", "brothers", "Russian's" all have sibilance, have exaggerated "s" or "sh". Also the vocals were edgy  and raspy compared to the HD558 and the HD598.

Senn HD558 : Could not tell the difference compared to HD598. Sounded similar to the AD700. Was more transparent than the AD700. Seem more laid-back compared to the AD700. (Need more time with it or use with an amp at the shop)

I would also like to know how are the HD555/595 compare to the HD558/598. I could not try HD555/595 as locally it has been faced out. Are the differences huge? Worth the extra cash? Cause if it is not, getting the HD595's at the amazon promo price seems more worthwhile.

So now I have narrowed down to these few which I'm considering and will audition. Hope you guys can help me narrow down my first pair of cans!

EDIT on 04/01/11

I have so far audition the following, ATH-A700 / AD700 / AD900 / M50, Shure SRH840, Senn HD558 / 598, Beyer DT 770 / 880 (600ohm) / 880 Pro (600ohm) / 880 Pro (250ohm) / 990 (600ohm).

On the list is the HD 598 and the Beyer DT 880 (600 ohm version)

Here is the problem I was about to make my purchase but the price difference between the Pro and non-Pro version of the DT 880 600ohm version, made me take a step back.

I check with the salesman and he said that there is hardly any difference in audio quality, the Pro's were cheaper because they were made for studios, musicians etc while the non-Pro was made for consumers who had the extra cash to spend.

So I need you guys to help me here, the thread I read written by "Zombie_X" didn't help much when it cam to comparing the Pro and non-Pro versions.

To me there was an obvious difference, the non-Pro DT880 600ohm version sounded better, but the salesman said that was due to the "burn-in" which I could not dismiss, as the non-Pro 880's were their demo set while the Pro 880's was a new set they took out of a box to let me try.

I believe the mmx-300 is basically a beyer dt770 with a boom mic.  Many people seem to prefer the dt880/dt990 for gaming. If you want a closed back headphone though then the mmx-300 could be the one you're after.

Hmm sorry for being a noob but couldn't find a link on google to describe "closed back headphone".

The thing here is I don't have a audio card and getting the Xonar Essence STX plus a headphone is gonna set me back $600++ (about $260 for Xonar)

While the Beyerdynamic MMX-300 with the included usb sound card dongle costing $300+ will be more than enough to get me started. Thus I wouldn't need to get a audio card.

exchange rate from where I come from $1US - $1.32

The ad700s if you want open headphones or the dt770 if you want closed are the best headphones for gaming within reasonable price imo.

I'm guessing open rest on the ears and closed, over the ears? Then what about the mic? And I'm on onboard sound from eVGA X58 SLI-LE, do I need to get an audio card or would just onboard be fine?

You can read this

Regarding the amp, if you plan on getting the 300's. Having one is recommended.

Beyerdynamic DT990.

Great bass for explosions etc.

Very detailed mids.

Nice treble on the 600ohm model with a tube amp for picking up footsteps etc.

Massive soundstage for great 3D audio positioning.

You wont regret it :)

If you're looking for a good headphone for Fps gaming and accurate positioning, take a look at the AD700's.
They work well straight from your soundcard.

Hi guys,

I went and got myself a Asus Xonar Essence STX soundcard and later went to audition the HD598, Beyer DT880(250) and the ATH-A700. Shop didn't have others I wanted to audition, HD555, HD595, ATH-AD700 and ATH-M50.

I auditioned all the cans with my trusty Cowon D2+. Materials were rock, alternative and pop at V0. Ingame footage made by me of Black Ops ~Vorcuta~ and Mass Effect 2 ~Shadow Broker's Base~

Game
ATH-A700 - Too Bassy as compared to the other two. In Black Ops ~Vorcuta~ the sound of fire, electric spark and speech (In the vorcuta mine) all seem harsh as compared to the other two.

HD 598 - The "sss" from words "curse" and "voice"  all had this nice ring to it, overall best sounding in speech as compared to the other two. Sounds from reloading of the pistol had a nice "click" and gunshots all sounded better then the other two.

Beyer DT880(250) - Sounded quite like the HD585 but maybe abit dull. (Used my  D2 with a GoVibe Peak desktop headphone amp)

Music

Didn't really spent much time on it so will have to re-audition.

ATH-A700 - Too much bass for my liking.

HD 598 - Initial impressions kinda sound neutral.

Beyer DT880(250) - Similar to the HD598 but maybe not as good.

I'm still undecided and need help from you guys before re-auditioning.

What is the difference between the HD555 vs HD558 and HD595 vs HD598 ?

What is the difference between the different DT880 versions 32ohm, 250ohm and 600ohm. (The sales man only said, lower ohm easier to drive no need for amp)

Difference between DT 880 and 990 ?

And local price which more worthwhile to get. (All prices in US after converting from my local currency at 1US - 1.32 S)

ATH-A700 - S$197

HD 598 - $308

Beyer DT880(250) - $408

Special Promo at shop: Beyer DT880(250) + GoVibe Peak desktop headphone amp - $347

Hope to get some good feedback, and if you guys still have other headphones within the range that is good for gaming (music and movies too) please do share.

The A700 (closed) is not nearly as good as the AD700 (open) (IMO).

Ya the ATH-AD700 were sold out and they didn't have any I could audition, have to go hunt for a place to try it before deciding.

If you're interested in a closed set of gaming cans, you might look into the Ultrasone Pro 750 or 900.  I have the Pro 900 and they are by far the most accurate cans for (fps) gaming that I've tested to date.  Positioning is much better than the Sennheiser PC350, HD600, AKG K702, and HifiMan HE-5 that I've owned.  They have the added benefit of a solid bass line that some of the other contenders for best gaming can lack.

Looks like the local shop carries the 750, will try them. My budget is <$300USD so the 900's...=.=

BTW: An upgrade from onboard to the Xonar Essence STX is like night and day! Using my Essence STX with a UE T.fi 10 pro, can't imagine what a good headphone will do.
