I'm glad to finally hear that the headphones are being shipped, it seemed like forever even though I'm only in the Group Buy waiting list :)

Good luck to you all, I look forward to seeing some nice eye candy here - or should I say ear candy ;)

heh I wanted a carved or burned set and a screw on cable and pmed smeggy 3 times about it during different times but he ignored my questions.

while I sympathise with smeggy's circumstances, I'm really disappointed in the service level and what I percieve as a lack of respect for his customers (nfi when I can even expect my set). I'd just like to make it clear.

these better be the best sounding cans (even vs iems I bought)

wow. if build quality is as described in that thread......
plus I ordered 2 sets of pads...if they're glued, why'd smeggy let my buy another pair O.o ?

I'm just gonna look at tyll's chart and hope sample variation is insignificant by magic... http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/FostexT50RPDSmeggyThunderpantsontherivet.pdf

When my set is complete Smeggy is sending it to Tyll for testing.

Seems Mochan and Sherwin (both members here) didn't like Sherwin's pair.  A couple (speculative) things to note:

1) I don't know when Sherwin bought his pair, but I'm under the impression that Smeggy's Thunderpants have been a work in progress - an older pair may not sound as good as a newer one.  When he started making them he was a guy in his basement with a passion for audio who had wood.  Now he is the same guy trying to do this full time - I would imagine he's investing in better equipment, tweaking damping, etc - in other words, there may have been more variability in pairs in the past and thus more polarity with opinions.
2) It's really hard to make good closed headphones.  Even the pairs that some people like (D2-7K, ED series, DX1000 among current production) others hate.  I don't think Thunderpants are any different, they're a hit or a miss - with those users I guess something was amiss.
3) Sometimes things can be over-hyped.  With Jude's review and an immediate group buy, there can be a strong gag reflex among those who hate FOTM.  While I will say they are the best (current production) closed headphone I've heard, I'd also say there isn't much else on the market.

It would be interesting to send a few pairs to Tyll and have him measure them - I would assume the variability is more than say with the LCD-3 yet, as it is still really a DIY effort.

That just sounds so wrong

But seriously, agree 100%.  Psychology is a funny thing.

I have no idea if I'm going to be really into or be meh about these.  But I love my Ed8s and I would remiss to not give these a shot, and it all will come down to what I value in sound given the necessary constraint of a closed design.

The purpose of my purchase of the Thunderpants is to show off when I am walking around and all. I have LCD3 and SR009 for home/office use anyway. I hope it is better than my T5p which has a design I don't like to walk around with. I hope my Thunderpants won't have glue sticking out when I want to use it and show it off on the street / in the mall etc.

With all due respect, these things seem rather large for portable use, no?  Do they really clamp that well for walking around?  Also I'd be worried about scratching the wood, etc.

This is an area where I question if anything can top the Ed8s... they're quite small, look amazing (IMO), clamp hard/great isolation, fairly impervious to damage, and have decent fidelity when used straight out of a DAP.  They are pricey though.

It is quite portable considering I have seen a guy wearing the ED10 on the street - looks really large (I have one at home too but I don't use it any more) and not to mention it is an open headphone... I have decided not to try other Ultrasone products after my purchase of the ED10 though, so I'm afraid I won't have the privilege to try the ED8... And since I already have the T5p, this leaves me with the Thunderpants which seem to be the best bet - and I hope my bet is right. :)
