Thunderpants (T50RP mod) Group Buy

The purpose of my purchase of the Thunderpants is to show off when I am walking around and all. I have LCD3 and SR009 for home/office use anyway. I hope it is better than my T5p which has a design I don't like to walk around with. I hope my Thunderpants won't have glue sticking out when I want to use it and show it off on the street / in the mall etc.

With the Stax pads they're a little big to walk around with them around your neck, but they're great for long plane/train/automobile rides.  Just don't use them on a greyhound or you will get mugged.

...Sometimes things can be over-hyped.  With Jude's review and an immediate group buy, there can be a strong gag reflex among those who hate FOTM.  While I will say they are the best (current production) closed headphone I've heard, I'd also say there isn't much else on the market...

I posted a video of my impressions of the Thunderpants. That is all. Gizmodo (to my surprise) ran the video on their site--given that Gizmodo is one of my favorite websites, I thought that was very cool to see them take interest in something having to do with what we talk about here.

Some love the Thunderpants, some don't. My opinion is mine, and I never try to tell anyone otherwise--and even rather constantly remind everyone who's reading what I'm typing, or watching one of my videos, that it's "in my opinion," and "to my ears."

I see in that outside thread that dragoonv linked to that I was being accused of saying the Aviator sounds good to me to attract a new sponsor. And, as I've said before, why on earth would I pick a headphone that almost anyone on Head-Fi can hear at a Best Buy or an Apple Store (which, for most on here, is within easy reach) to lie about? Others have also since posted that they have found the Aviator (and now also the Mix Master Mike) to be surprisingly good (considering Head-Fi'ers hadn't really ever given thought to trying Skullcandy headphones). Again, will we all agree? No.

I see in that thread that one of the guys didn't like the PX 200-II (which I do), and that somehow suggests that my opinion of it (and, thus, anything else I might say) might generally be invalid. A lot of other people also enjoy the PX 200-II, and hear it as a substantial improvement on the first version of the PX 200. I guess their opinions are similarly invalid and/or sinister?

I see in that thread that one of the guys didn't like the DT 1350. Again, this was stated in a manner that seemed to me to suggest a questioning of my opinion. Again, a lot of other people find the DT 1350 to be one of the top portable over-ear headphones on the market. I stand by my opinion--it's my opinion, and time has shown I'm certainly not alone. But will everyone agree? No.

I then buy a Thunderpants, and post a video about it--a headphone made by one guy (a fellow Head-Fi'er) that I bought--a guy who'll probably never be a sponsor on Head-Fi. Politics of some sort is suggested. What politics? Again, I'm obviously not alone in enjoying the Thunderpants by Smeggy. Does everyone who's heard it agree? No.

So if I like a headphone made by a sponsor, these guys see me as a shill. If I like a headphone made by a non-sponsor, these guys essentially accuse me of lying to attract a new sponsor (about a headphone that just about anyone reading Head-Fi is within a 30-minute trip of hearing for himself). And if I like a headphone made by a Head-Fi'er who'll almost certainly never sponsor the site, these guys will find a reason to assert I'm up to no-good there, too. I can't win with guys like that, so I don't try to.

Here's what it is, plain and simple, and it happens all the time, on every forum, on every topic: Sometimes we agree. Sometimes we disagree. I'm just one guy, and have never promoted myself as the arbiter of all you should like and not like. Sometimes you'll agree with me. Sometimes you won't.

Some will find, for reasons having nothing to do with agenda, politics, sinister intentions, etc., that their sonic preferences simply aren't consistent with mine. If you can find how we consistently disagree, then perhaps my impressions may still have value to you (or not).

So is it FOTM backlash? I don't know, and I don't much care. I generally tend to post about what I like, and that's not likely to change; and some guys on this or any other forum who're going to bust extra chops because it happens to turn into what they view as flavor-of-the-month isn't going to change how it sounds to me.

Like I said, I posted a video on YouTube and iTunes that expressed my opinion of the Thunderpants. That's it.

To clarify, my comment was not "Jude over-hyped these."  The review+the group buy+Giz all sort of coalesced into an FOTM, which some people seem to just hate.  With almost any product out there you'll find a thread somewhere  that disparages it/it's maker/those who buy it.  To re-iterate, from what I have heard these are the best closed headphones on the market.  Jude, you're in a similar Catch-22 as many who are seen as "in power," whether it's politicians, talking heads, or celebrities.  Your words and actions will be misconstrued to best fit the intent of the construer.

Regarding the glue issue:  I believe it's only older versions that have glued on earpads, and I believe it was earlier in this thread that Smeggy said he was standardizing the baffle to make it easy for anyone to swap out the pads as they please.  I'm sure some of the other details have been fine tuned along the way as well.  There's no reason to start worrying at this point.  If you get them and find you don't care for the sound, you can probably resell them without taking much of a hit.

Sorry Jude, shouldnt have post out that, but I guess its good to see you explaining and defending what you said so others can understand better.

I actually have my doubts on what that person (who hates PX100, DT1350, TP) says. As I find my DT1350 quite amazing. It is not a headphone that will wow me right after I put it on. To my ears, it has the aggresive element to it but yet gentle enough for me to listen to it for a period of time.

Thats why when I get my Thunderpants, I am gonna do a review on it as well.. It will not be based on anyone's reviews. Hopefully it will not be seen as a biased review, but again, it is headphone we are talking about...very subjective.

Anyway keep up with the good work and keep the videos coming :-D

Hi all,

I'd like to apologize in advance for the briefness of my post--I'm really busy at the moment, but wanted to give you guys an update.

The good news:  I received my pair of Thunderpants!

The bad news:  They appear to have stock pads instead of the ones I requested/paid for, and their is what I'm pretty sure is a scratch/blemish going across half of one cup.

I'm not really sure what to do.  If I contact Gary, there's no telling when or if he'll get back.  And even then, what happens, and how much additional time will it incur?

I'll post pictures when I get a chance to take some, and will hold off on my impressions until I have had adequate time to listen to them.

Best,

Brent

Gary has been pretty responsive to emails, I've contacted him several times, I'm sure you can get the padding sorted out without much hassle.  Does the construction seem to be in order otherwise?

Any update on the progress for the rest of us who ordered? Or should we just expect it to pop up any day now?

Jude, you're in a bit of a catch-22, more so than most, since it's your site - some people just won't trust your opinion even though you qualify it as being, well, an opinion! Even people with absolutely no stake in the site attract their share of naysayers/contrarians; as a website grows, more people will both agree and disagree in posts, but we tend to notice the negative posts/comments more. It's not as though you did an about face and suddenly began singing the praises of all things Beats by Dre...I say brazenly continue to give your honest opinion and take the naysayer's rebuttals/comments with a grain of salt. Or, you can always respond to such by quoting the Dude: "That's just, like, your opinon, man!"

Brent, any updates?  Esp. on the sound?

I somewhat suspect things might have taken a bit longer due to Smeggy trying to really standardize a sound amongst the phones due to having a larger batch to work with, and perhaps he spent alot more time noodling to achieve that consistency.

Is the group buy still available? What is the discount compared to buying without the discount? Are the Thunderpants significantly better than Denon 7000s?
