northern soul is just as good as funk IMO: YouTube - Northern Soul ! Eddie Spencer - If This Is Love (I'd Rather Be Lonely)

it's a slight rip off "Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons - Beggin", but still fantastic!

NS is the same as heavy funk w/o the syncopated breakbeats...and "goldmine soul supply" knows a thing or two about NS, they have zillion killer compilations..like this one, which is AMAZING: The Cleethorpes Story: Various Artists: Amazon.co.uk

what we have here is a 25-track journey from traditional sixties soul through funk

Lou has one of the most amazing voices in soul...he's up there w/ Barry White, always a pleasure to hoard his records.

yes, Axelrod was his main arranger and he also did killer stuff like "The Edge" and many many more funky goodness...he said he couldn't concieve music w/o a funky beat, it's always a good sign

humm this CD definitely delivers:

this record company is run by a french guy who's been obsessed w/ 70's funk for a loooong time, they were mostly releasing LP's(I really don't see the point, because the sources are 7" so who wants to listen to second generation crackles?

), but they have a few other compilations on CD...will have to listen to the mp3 previews as they cost $5 a pop here

Various Artists (Soul Patrol Records) - 'The Players'
Various Artists (Soul Patrol Records) - 'The Rhythm Masters'

I heard some of their vinyl compilations, there were pretty dull...but that Funky Hot Pants includes 14 killer rare grooves I had never heard before...70's funk defintely makes for an endless source of amazement

As JB says "It's Man's Man's Man's World. But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl."
Betty Davis' self titled album can holds its own in a man's world.

Jimmy Hendrix playing Purple Haze in an early funky soul band?
I remember this getting played on the UK N.Soul circuit in the early 80's.

Check it out.

YouTube - Johnny Jones & The King Casuals - Purple Haze

'The band, which was originally named 'The King Kasuals', was founded in 1962 by Jimi Hendrix and bassist Billy Cox in Clarksville, Tennessee, United States, after the two were discharged from the adjacent Fort Campbell Army post, and eventually relocated to Nashville.'

I think thats Jimmy on the left.

More Jimmy Hendrix funky soul guitar, this time a bit harder.

Sweet Thang - Billy LaMont
YouTube - Sweet Thang - Billy LaMont - HQ

BTW Was doing some research and the purple haze song I posted earlier may not have had Jimmy Hendrix playing on it. Although he was in the band at some point, mind you the facts are hard to come by, and I'm sure I can hear some Jimmy tongue clicks in it.

woohah, TONY MIDDLETON...such a killer voice!

I'm getting more and more addicted to NS...humm the repetitive xylophone riff and his voice mix so well together, it's like a "clean" version of JB.

Goldmine Soul Supply put that "Paris blues" song of his on that compilation: The Wigan Casino Story Vol.3 : The Final Chapter: Various Artists: Amazon.co.uk

GSS has poisoned me when ever since I was 15yo w/ their "sound of funk" compilations, it's about time I dig into their NS CD's now

one for the road(Nina Simone's cover is also KILLER): YouTube - Ike & Tina Turner - Funkier Than a Mosquita's Tweeter

or that killer tune, when Tina was JB's alter ago shredding her larynx like only him could: YouTube - Ike and Tina Turner- Bold Soul Sister

OTOH, it wasn't quite there yet in live: YouTube - ike and tina turner bold soul sister

Top notch tune. I think I can smell the talcum powder. The trouble with northern soul is that the likely hood of ever finding an original 45 at the record store is less than zero. Pretty much the same for funk 45s oh well there certainly are compilations out there.
