ah, pretty nice...but a tad too binary to my taste, it'd need a more syncopated beat.

I'm currently listening to this: Amazon.com: Love Songs: Lou Rawls

his raw voice, excellent singing skills and funky Axelrod arrangements make it a done deal

the SQ of that song is most excellent, that funky Fender Rhodes and drums just hit the spot: YouTube - Lou Rawls I'll See You When I Get There

I kinda like the stompers as well as the swing.

Geno Washington (UK 60's soul legend) has been touring UK recently. He does a few James Brown covers as well as his own and him and the band are tight! You can pick up some of his gigs on youtube if you missed them.

This is his Album from the 60's, gotta be one of the best names for a funk Album ever (although it was mostly soul). He also did an Album called Hipsters Flipsters and Finger Bopping Daddies.

I have been wandering, what is the earliest Funk song? I guess you have to define funk first, according to Rick James earlier its all on the one!

ah nice, I'll check it out!

it's funny you should mention "tight", because I've collected a number of rare groove compilations over time...and it's always vastly annoying when the band is not tight

there's a good reason why JB was being such a PITA towards his band

earliest funk song? you'd have to dig into blues IMHO...this track is from the late 60's and the drums are plain funky DNB(sorry for the horrid SQ, it sounds much better on the remastered CD): YouTube - EARL HOOKER-TWO BUGS IN A RUG

it's from 1967: Amazon.com: There's a Fungus Amung Us: Earl Hooker

it's even got that "dinosaur walk" JB wanted at the beginning of each bar.

I think JB really got funky around 1968, but that's one of the earliest tracks I've heard w/ such a killer funky breakbeat.

I don't really like how he spoke about jamaican reggae, but well he's JB...he can say and think wth he wants

I guess he should have got a fine here: YouTube - James Brown - I Got The Feelin' (Mike Douglas Show 1969)

coz it very much sounds like he messed up big time

OTOH, the sitting audience in front of him looks bored to death..

hehe yeah, WattStax...Black Moses killed there
smily_headphones1.gif

but apart from a few songs like "shaft" or "walk on by", I find it a bit too laid back to my taste..

I think my fav. Mayfield song is this one: YouTube - pusherman

that was at the Soul Train TV show...there's some Japanese bootleg DVDs from JB at that show, eye popping material

Grover Washington also did some killer funky stuff in the 70's: YouTube - Grover Washington jr - Hydra

I never get bored of listening to his 70's album:

My god, this thread is a goldmine.
I'm going spotify grazing in the morning

BTW, massive headhunters fan here.
Used to play in a reasonably popular funk band. We covered loads of JB, HerbieH spanning into Motown. Good times, good times.
