I personally thought it was for sure behind the Cayin and LP stuff. Yeah, ugh… that LP UI… about that.
It's a real shame you didn't get to hear it with the lastest firmware. It's also opened up very nicely after the 200h mark - seems to be getting better and better, a very different sound even to the burned in sound on the first firmware. It's already surpassed the R8 for synergy with all of my IEMs.
This fact has prompted me to re-think the current prevailing wisdom that transducers are at least as important as sources.
To me transducers will always be the most important, by a factor of 2:1 at least. But I've come to appreciate the importance of synergy and sound profile in portable devices, almost as much as the desktop gear I used to tweak until I got tired of tweaking. Some sources just impose themselves on the sound, and if you like what they're doing with your IEMs, they become integral to the chain.

I've no desire to buy a desktop amp as I move about the house a lot, several listening locations.

I want an M17...with an R2R DAC.
Apols in advance, but once again, I just don't understand the M17, as it is really much more like a small piece of desktop kit, and a very expensive one at that. I have acquired ALL of my Schiit for less $$, and that's given me 2-3 different listening points around the house, sourced either with MBP, iPhone or iPad depending. The thing is, if you go this way, your options open up dramatically for R2R-type DACs at a much more affordable cost...

Anyway, you do you!

If I was going to buy an Audeze planar headphone what's the best option taking into account 1) reasonable cost, 2) sound quality and 3) being easy to drive/not as source sensitive? Asking for a friend.
I don't think any Audeze meets all 3 criteria, as they are generally fairly power-hungry. That said, the LCD-2C is probably the best cost/performance one, although some would argue LCD-X. I've got no other DAPs than the SR25, which I've never bothered to try sourcing the LCD-2C. Thing is, you can pick up a Vali2+ for just $150, and it amps the SR25 very nicely. I was using that combo just yesterday with my LCD-2C for a change from the BF2/Jot2 and found it very enjoyable.

It's a good point and I honestly know ef-all about desktop amps, I'll do some reading over Christmas.

Except that it’s impossible to find!! Haha
I bought it from Japanese store using Buyee.
Japanese store doesn’t ship directly but buyee can inspect it and ship it to you with DHL/FEDEX/UPS, shipping aren’t high.
1677ss are available also from some HK stores.
