I like as little coloration in my music as possible. The HD 600 is clearly better.

i used to sit near the percussion section once upon a time, with a piece of brass in my mouth..
gotten used to hearing MORE of the pounding bass...its a kind of enjoyment really, its not coloration to my ears.
so the hd600 ..though neutral, is too tame for me after awhile...i need that visceral pounding in the music, classicals n all.
but once it sounds right, u want MORE BASS, and the hd600 doesnt have it..

Supposedly from the HD650 Press Release:
"In their quest to develop even better dynamic headphones, Sennheiser consulted high-end specialists, sound engineers and trade journalists. They even consulted internet forums to complete the picture. This intensive research revealed an interesting fact: that listening habits have changed. Today, people prefer to “feel” the music rather than to analyze it. The result was the HD 650 – headphones that captivate the listener with the ultimate in lifelike reproduction, while still maintaining absolute precision."
So there are two camps - those who likes to analyze music (treble) and those who wants to "feel" the music (bass). As to saying either one is clearly better I would say.. Nope, it's the same headphone just tuned differently (see measurements). So what sets them apart in the end.. preference.
Not the same headphone, first thing is that the drivers are different. The sensitivity is very different. Of course look inside....not the same either.
From Innerfidelity:
"When first introduced Sennheiser touted an aluminium voice coil and improved diaphragm material for the HD 650. Upon inspecting the current HD 650 and HD 600 driver and baffle plate assembly I found them to be very similar. The damping material appears to be a very similar metal mesh, but the HD 650 mesh looks slightly finer than the HD 600. The diaphragms look identical, but there are manufacturer markings on the material that are slightly different."
Note that we are talking about something that is supposed to be clearly better as in a huge difference and not virtually the same. I own HD-600 and HD-650 and I don't hear any huge "sound quality" difference between them (I'm not talking about sound signature).
McDonald's hamburger with onion or without onion? Which one is better? I think the no-onion one has more natural taste and clearly better than the one with onion. W.T....
