Apologies from steering the topic away from uber-gear, but I'm curious about your experiences with simple mods for Pro Bias Lambda-style models that increase bass. I found out by chance that slightly raising the pads from my head resulted in a noticeable increase in bass in both my L300 and Nova Basic. This seems to have no effect on Normal Bias Lambdas, or the round driver Normal Bias models (tried on NB Lambdas, SR-X mk3, SR-3, SR-5, SR-Gamma).

Reading around on various forums I see other people had the same experience, and one of the well know mods for the L300 is to use spacers for pads. I did that, and the result is ok-ish but not what I expected. So I went down to my local cafe today, borrowed a straw, and did a simple bass port mod to my lowly Nova Basic. The result is pretty astounding, with the deeper and more impactful bass I have heard from any of my (admittedly budget) Stax, rivaling any of my planars.

Anyone else tried it, and what are your thoughts on it? This is my very simple, reversible mod.

Hey all

Just bought myself a pair of Stax SR-007mk2 and looking for a reasonably priced amp to go with them. There some second hand stuff around that I could go with but was wondering peoples thoughts. I could go the STAX SRM-400s or STAX SRM-727mk2 or KGSS Mini second hand.

Any thoughts as to if any of these would pair up well or if I have to look further.

Note I’m a mixing / mastering engineer so need something transparent

Many people have done and published such mods on multiple platforms. It certainly helps with the infamous STAX fart. However, while it adds kick-bass, I reduces or even kills sub-bass (more or less).

Sounds like 2021 on is considered different than the 2015-2020ish years (or so)

Is it really worth hundreds extra to end up with a 2.9 to mod?

I would say the kgssHV made be a good builder like Mjolnir , would be a nice addition to your arsenal without breaking the bank. $2k~ used, possibly even get lucky and find a mini one which has all the power but tiny footprint for the desktop area.
No warmup needed, zero noise floor. Will give you 85-90% of the Carbon juice and does well with the older Stax models like the 007/LNS/omega.

The mini is a really good match with 007. And I presume ES1a, though I haven't tried that. Plenty of power. Mini was too bright for my liking with 009. It is kind of like a Carbon Jr.

I believe you that you think that is the case. Measurements support my statement, though.

There's very little musical content below 35hz, and most of the so-called deep bass in music is around 50hz. So yes, if you break the seal, you can get a perceptual increase in deep bass. The sub-bass below 50hz will be rolled off however.

You can easily test this with a test tone generator. That will give you a more accurate picture as to what the bass extension is than most music. Bear in mind that it is very hard to hear anything below 30hz anyway, but with a broken seal you will likely hear a steep drop off below 50hz and a bump between 50-100hz.

This is also one of those cases where measurements will be deceptive. We're kinda led to believe that you need flat bass extension down to 10hz or w/e when in reality it's largely irrelevant. There are a few recordings however that do have bass that low, and games and movies will often add sub-bass rumbles to sounds to exaggerate the impact. So there are cases where it matters, but they're edge cases.

I personally don't do this though as the bump between 50-100hz is more annoying than the sub-bass dropping out.
