The Stax Thread III

@ardilla

You and your friend got to rewrite that article. How can a low price l700, 404, 507 sound good? The "experience veteran" and the "rich with no experience" in the last pages are saying, "expensive and new gear= greatest thing ever made."

@protoss your intended signal has become noise. This has become a repetitive monologue. For the love of Christ please move on.

The electrostatic people need to get and the prices:

Stax 009 $1400-1800 (used)
Stax 009 $2200 (new)
Stax L700mk2 $800 (used)
Stax L700mk2 $1200-1600 (new)
Stax 007A $1100-1500 (used)
Stax 007A $1800-2200 (new)
Stax L500mk2 $500-600 (used)
Stax L500mk2 $800 (new)

Don’t waste money on Voce or any of that plywoodman nonsense. All Stax gear is less than 2K
The real authentic true electrostatic sound is found in the Lambdas, 1979-2000.

You have been lied to by the amateur rich. They are the biggest source of lies and error.

Get the L500Mk2 and be happy.
If you want the real taste of estats, they are found in the 1979-2000 lambdas. All can be had for $300 to 1K.

@protoss where you finding the 009 at $2200 new man?

even though I'm totally with you on the complete ripoffness of megabuck phones, of all of them that I got rid of I still miss the 009(S) for its unique sound presentation

Yahoo Japan, "like new" technically was brand new. Unless they resealed the packaged perfectly.
I actually like the 009
009 $1400-1600, 009S $2200-$2600.

The secret is the 009BK.

009BK
009
009S

If I need to rank it. I place the 009BK as my pick. It could be placebo.
Btw, just messing with these guys 😆 but with lots of truth and mystery 😆

It doesn't come across that way in text, unfortunately.

You have to ignore Protoss like 75% of the time. He does this on purpose as a hobby lol ‘

Anyways, I’m just chiming in to say that I really love the alternative stat options out there, headphones and amps both. It really opens things up for people to get interested or into stat chains, which I think is really amazing for the hobby. I do also think some of the newcomers have done well for first offerings, and hope to see more improvement in the true TOTL race beyond Stax, which I don’t think we’re really far from. (With the 009 and x9000 being up there in representative of what Stax can best do at that absolute level for me).

Thanks for the overview. Too bad we need to wait to see if each new post is coming from the 75% hobby or the 25% good info with no grief side. Obviously once posted it will show it’s purpose.

I know as a member since 2005 I come here for interest, info and enjoyment not anger & frustration.

👍🏻

I also get the feel that @protoss is trolling most of the time, and I honestly find it quite amusing. But I can see how it can come across otherwise.

I do agree that Lambdas will make a better starting point as they don't need as much amp, and as a result will sound more lively and dynamic on basic systems. The newer ones do need a bit of EQ though and they can lack bass extension. They're not perfect but I'd still take one over an under-driven 007 any day, though if you really want world-class sound out of one you'll need to do some work.

More options in the market are always welcome - as long as they're good options.

Regarding the Stax Mafia, it's actually quite simple. In the end, the truth wins out. If somebody is constantly hammering the same point home, and it's not true, they lose credibility. On the other hand, if it is true, but it's something many don't want to hear, there will be a lot of annoyance, but eventually people realize they're right. I'm not gonna get into it more than that though.

I guess I'm a bit of a "Stax loyalist" and also really admire the Stax mafia for their expertise, focus on engineering quality, and amp designs. Especially KG. But then I don't really get on with Birgir. And they're kind of in this no-man's land between ASR guys (objectivist snobs) and super high-roller high-end guys (subjectivist snobs).

I'm a big fan of ESLab HK, and hope they come out with more products in this space. I'd like to try the Audeze CRBN - those look nice. I was kinda "bleh" on DCA even before their electrostat entry, so I've admittedly been biased against them from the start. For 3rd party amps, I want to see products with more engineering chops behind them. The Mafia may be biased, but they point out some really cringe stuff about other amps that I think is legit.
