The Stax Thread III

After just a whisker under 4 months away, the prodigal son has returned. Amazing how long more it would have taken if I had not lost my patience with the unending wait and total lack of information from Stax or from Project Perfection (owned by the Dita boys) the Singapore AD. Big shout out to Jeremy and AV One for not giving up on my cause. Only when Jeremy intervened that there was news and feedback. Even then, Stax dropped the ball as the X9K was supposed to have come back early March, which would have still made it 3 months to fix the notorious driver imbalance issue.

Chilling with it on the KGST fed by the Bricasti M1 DAC. :)

greetings would the new woo audio wa7e outperform the stax 007tii amp with stax l700 headphone

The Stax equivalent would be the SRM-D50 base on function and feature of the wa7e.
But it solid state amp (stax) vs tube (wa7e)
007t ii is higher up the chain with no DAC builtin, so price wise alone, the answer should be yes.

I received a Woo Audio WA7e today. It sounds quite good with my SRM-007 MK2. It replaed a STAX SRM-006tA in my set up. I also like the aesthetics as it matches my system colors well and the tubes light up my day:)

So far (2 hours in) I am very pleased with this reasonably priced eState headphone amplifier.

The WA7e is so cute, a little glass+metal cube. There's a real dearth of compact estat amps, and while I suspect the WA7e is likely to be outperformed by some of the third-party amps or modded Stax amps, the form factor appeal is pretty strong for me. And I've long thought that my L700mk2 sounded a bit more pleasant overall on my low-power SRM-D10 rather than the higher-power modded 006tS, so a warmer, more bloomy-sounding amp might be a better pairing too.

It was the perfect size for my set up. If I were to purchase the X9000 I would probably do a BHSE or something similar...

For now I have a big smile on my face.

Good to hear, enjoy the newbie. Fortunately, if you were to get the X9000 they are not overly hungry so just rip out that wallet when you feel the urge.

Again, Enjoy…..

I have borrowed Stax L700mk2 + SRM D10, and ... I am not amazed, lacking of low bass, lacking of midrange juice, only holography and separation is outstanding, but overal I expected more, comparing to rest of my headphones setups.
Am rather confused, many are happywith D10,i own L700mk2 but with 400s, bass is excellent, midrange gorgeous.

My other headphones are Aeon 2C and Quad Era-1 which have excellent extended bass, A2C has its even bumped a bit. Maybe that's the case.
Anyway after I plugged my own DAC (SMSL M400) to D10 and using only AMP section from Stax D10, then everything sounds better, more powerful, with better bass as well, but still subbass is something that is quite poor here.

The L700 has a ported design, so it will never have good sub-bass extension regardless of amplifier. That's why some people do the "blu-tac mod" to seal up the ports and allow for linear bass extension. To me, the mod also messed up the midrange and treble, so I prefer the L700mk2 without it (and the headphone didn't seal on my head anyways), but I know many other people prefer the sound with the mod.
