The Stax Thread III

I followed his mod guide and it works very well.
Oooh. Selling yours? Anyone know where I can get the mod performed for me? I would ideally get an SRD7 mk2 modded but the link doesnt give instruction for that.

I’m not sure what respects the SRD-7 can outperform a direct-drive estat amp
Price. Whats the next cheapest thing that isnt apparently horribly flawed? Doesnt the mod linked above address some of SRD-7’s shortcomings?

I also modded one of mines and it does indeed improve it. I still prefer the SRM-313 but that might be due more to my speaker amp than the SRD-7. 😀

The mod is very easy, there's lots of space to work and few changes to perform. PM me and I can share a list of materials you can order directly, then I'm sure most amp repair people can do it for you locally.

Thanks Ludoo. PMed

Listening to SR-X mk3 this morning, as long as I avoid any music requiring much bass the SR-X mk3 is very excellent. The midrange to treble transition is smoother than RS2x, and I think in that area specifically SR-X surpasses RS2x for (micro)detail. Guitar and vocals particularly sound lovely, whereas Grado enhances artificially (relatively speaking). I am curious to compare them in more depth, but dont want to bother until I address SR-X’s upstream gear… at that point of investement Im going to want to top it off with a Lambda NB. How much do those normally go for and how often do they come available?

Muddy Waters is lovely, such micro: guitar, vocal, harmonica.

It's your lucky day, I outlined the MK2 differences HERE and HERE

I didn't do the output filter he talks about, the most important and impactful change is removing those four little red disks (thermistors) and replacing them with those two black 5W 4.7Ohm resistors seen in the attached photo.

Easy mod, you can do it. I implore you to buy a $15 soldering iron on Amazon and give it a shot!

Awesome! Thanks gammi! I have a soldering iron but not a very steady hand so am reluctant but will give it a try.

Are these suitable replacements? Not exactly the same look.:

Those are 5% tolerance meaning there's going to be a lot of variation. If you just order extra, measure them and use the ones closest to 4.7 it's fine.
Ideally would use non-magnetic resistors as well but it's not a big deal.

Yes, the SR-X Mk3 is lovely. There is pretty deep precise bass. But just not lots of bass.

As for Lambda NB, I would suggest going to Yahoo Japan auction site to have a look. It is a treasure trove of goodies. And they tend to be in great condition. As foreigners, we have to use Buyee services.

One sold for $265 on there today. Expect to pay $30ish in shipping to the US and possibly a small amount in import fees.

Time to hibernate from head-fi for a little bit. I've sold off my non-main gear...
Before I leave, I thought I would do a mini-ranking of the 2021 to 2023 e-stat systems I've owned for an extended period and after any sort of novelty has worn off.
This is not a technical ranking, but based on subjective enjoyment.

1. 007mk1 (712xx) + Megatron ($10,000)
2. 007mk1 (712xx) + Carbon ($7,000)
3. x9000 + Novem ($9,300)
4. x9000 + Carbon ($11,300)
5. 007mk1 (712xx) + KgssHV mini ($5,000)
6. x9000 + KgssHV mini ($9,300)
7. 007mk1 (SZ1) + KgssHV mini ($5,000)
8. 009s + Carbon ($9,000)
8 (tie). Audeze CRBN + Carbon ($9,000)
10. Lambda Nova Signature + Carbon ($5,500)
11. Lambda Nova Signature + Megatron ($8,500)
11 (tie). 009s + KGST ($7000)
13. Lambda Nova Signature + Novem ($3500)
LAST PLACE. 007 (any) + Novem ($5000) *not enough power

Noteworthy well listened to items:
* Sr-omega on the carbon or better amp would be ranked above all of these.
* 007 mk1 (70xxx) for me is between the 712xx and sz1 in terms of enjoyment and clarity.
* 007 mk1 (712xx) on the DIY T2 would be an additional click above the megatron combo.
* x9000 / BHSE or 007mk1 (712xx)/BHSE would both be around 3rd or 4th based on my impressions.
* CRBN or 009S on the BHSE are pretty much in the same spot as those units with the carbon.

Main thoughts:
> 007 can vary a lot unit to unit, but if you get a "good one" it's world class. It's also the lowest ranked here, when underpowered. If you go this route you need to plan to buy a few.
> Sr-omega is imo stax's best of all time.
> 007 + kgssHV is the best value
> x9k is a weird headphone

Took me until try #4 and then try #5 and 6 to verify I had reached the peak.

Haha. here is the log I've so far had...

1. 007 mk1 712xx
2. 007 mk1 700xx
3. 007 mk1 prototype (pre-serial)
4. 007 mk1 sz1, was a NOS one in great shape
5. 007 mk1 sz1 , late serial, sounded really "murky"
5. 007 mk2 - couple of them over the years

For me:
1. 007 mk1 70066
2. 007 mk1 71786 maybe 1% behind #1
3. 007 mk1 70664 much closer sounding to the SZ2’s than the other mk1’s
4. 007 mk2 SZ2 port mod - veiled and dull
5-6. 007 mk2 SZ2 - veiled and dull

Edit: I corrected the order on 1 and 3. What I originally typed was backwards.

This pretty much confirms most feedback and my own results 👍🏻
