The Stax SR-L500 and SR-L700 Impressions Thread

Damn I was afraid that would be the consensus, if only the L700 were a tad prettier lol. definitely on my shortlist

That was two opinions, not a consensus. The question has been asked in this topic several times before, so try searching for more opinions. I have not heard the L700, but I prefer the 009 over the 007. I think that preference is true for a slim majority of us.

Agree. The SR009 is much better than SR-L700 (both with same sources incl. Carbon) for me. I still own both but will sell SR-L700 one day.

On the Bass side?
I bought the L700, then wanted to upgrade to the SR009 and sell the L700 but I ended to keep both. The L700 has some specificities in its way to present the music and image the SR009 doesn't have.

On the Bass side?

I prefer SR-009 over SR-L700. What does Bob Katz say about the SR-L700 then? :)

Not really, I thinks the SR009 has better bass (while the L700 has a little more quantity).
I really enjoy the soundstage of the L700 while being smaller than the SR009 I feel it has a better "out of the head" feeling. The mids has also to my ears a more direct and involving presentation in comparison to the 009 making the L700 so pleasant to liste even though the 009 is to my ears the more technically competent headphone (slightly better resolution, slightly better extensions, bigger soundstage, slightly flatter response). I drive both with the SRM-717 (I used to use a SRM-006tS, but didn't liked it that much, especially with the L700).

Katz did absolutely love a Spritzer modified SR-007, one of his top favourite hp's he heard; he raves about them.

Not at all sayin' 007 is better, just sayin' what Katz liked.

Guessing the original Omega or 009 might be champagne tastes for me, but not happening on a beer budget, especially knowing I'd just want to keep finding the best (& highly unaffordable) amp for them.

Realistic goal is to save measely rubles now for a future SR-L700, drive it with what is here, then can later think about a better amp sometime if wanting an improvement.

It doesn't much matter to me if, or even how much better 007 and 009 are than L700. I simply will never be able to afford them.

L700 is my endgame due to budget.

I listened to the L300 out of the 252S and out of my KGSSHV Carbon.  They are not my flavor and not even close to the 007MK2's IMO.  I listened to a pair of 404 Sig's out of an SRM-006t with the only upgrade being tubes and I was far more impressed with them than the L300's.

Different strokes...
