The Reference 6J5 Thread (L63, 6C5, 12J5, 6P5, etc.)

As one of the lucky “almost no ones” I can attest the Telemachus is a gem. I’ve also replaced the 6SN7 with 6C5/6J5 adapters and never looked back
Post a pic with the 6J5 tubes. Not everyone on this thread will have seen that amp.

Man, that is such a legendary amp. Your adapters are so clean and well matched aesthetically that they look like part of the Tele itself. Silver never looked so good! Are you exclusively using 6J5’s these days?
It really is a handsome amp. Tomas did such a good job both with the circuits and casework. All of his amps look amazing. I wonder what happened to his personal ones. He made a 6bg6 amp that I dream of sometimes…

Thanks. I made those from Hammond project boxes and Belton sockets. They're overbuilt for the purpose but look cool, lol. Yes I'm exclusively 6J5/6C5 on the Telemachus. I'm sold on the concept of using dual single-triode preamp tubes in place of one double-triode tube. If my Sparkos Gemini doesn't sell I'm going to modify the case to fit my dual-6C4 adapter in that in place of the 12A(T/U/X)7.

Here are a couple photos showing examples of my 6J5-family tubes. Running quads of these in the Telemachus will give me any sound signature I'm in the mood for. Admittedly, I mostly use the GEC L63 or Raytheon engraved base tubes.

From left to right: GEC L63 (early Cossor branded, marked as 6C5G - super rare tube and I have 8 :L3000:), Brimar 6C5 (cool mesh shield surrounds the plate sructure), Raytheon engraved base ladder plate (left) and column plate (right) circa 1930's (I have various branding- Philco/Zenith/Raython/GM Parts), Tung-Sol VT-94A (another rare tube- took me a while to gather 4 matching)

From left to right: Sylvania (branded Zenith), Sylvania? solid column plate (branded Super Silvertone), RCA solid flat plate (branded GE), Ken Rad 6C5 / VT-65 metal (dual branded as Cossor with cool OEM boxes. Also have some RCA metal can the same way.

Thank you! Finding matching quads was the hardest part. By the way, for anyone that's interested The Container Store has neat display boxes that can be modified to hold tubes.

I found this picture from two years ago when I first got it. Look at how the Tele dwarfed the Glenn GOTL I had Lol. By the way, my amp is the first Tele built and is the one shown on the website in this picture. RIP Tomas :disappointed:

6C5 Westinghouse 2.jpeg6C5 Westinghouse 1.jpeg
So are these made in Canada or by RCA? I have only seen the photos and no codes.
So now these are warming up in my amp with a pair of Ken-Rad 6K6GT. They are patented and licensed by Thermionics Limited 1925-1942 but on the tubes it says 1943 as it seems. In the box it says "Licensed under patents owned and/or controlled by Thermionics Limited for use only in radio broadcast receiving sets for the non-Commercial reception of Public Radio Telephone Broadcasting".
Under this text it says in bold: PATENTED 1925-1942 INCLUSIVE.

So now I need to know what/who Thermionics Limited was. Did they have a connection with RCA?
The tubes are stamped with some digit that could be a horisontal X with 6C5 vertically above. They came in these boxes:
Stern & Stern 1.jpeg
Stern & Stern 2.jpeg

Elektronrör means vacuum tubes. Stern & Stern:

I can from the start say that I will enjoy these tubes. I think they will prove to have a sound signature of their own. Do I have Westinghouse to thank for this or is this a typical example of branding? (Listening to Charles Lloyd: Wild man dance).

Re: Thermionics Ltd: This might be useful... but it's quite tedious. lol :)

I just got these three Fivre 6C5G dirt cheap at a local place and I'm pretty stoked. The two brown base ones look like what you would expect them to, but the black base one has me a little confused.
Other than the different stamp, I have never seen the top section like this. I don't know what the two transparent arc-shaped parts are called, but one of them is placed in the middle of the tube instead of the side.
Is this a defect? It looks really weird and definitely different compared to other tubes.
