The PENON official thread

Finally picked up my first Penon, 10th Anniversary

As a confirmed basshead, I was hesitant on the acquisition, as some reports are of a fast sub bass, akin to a BA. But the visceral sub bass has authority and enough decay/rebound to allay my concerns.

Congrats! (Why not Quattro though?)

Neo1.jpg

Just finished evaluating the $39 ISN Neo1s - it's crazy what under $50 buys these days. You're invited to read the full review here.
That's right, for less than $50.👍🏻
To this day I still enjoy a CCA-CRA game that I bought barely a year ago and that cost me $9, on sale of course. I use them with a good KBEAR 4.4MM cable, SpinFit CP145 L pads or tips and all of this connected to a Shanling UA2 Plus dongle and my Xiaomi 12 with the Poweramp app and equalized with its corresponding preset.

It really is a pleasant experience for my ears.😉 I will surely buy these NEO 1

My Quattro is approaching the 200 hour mark of burn-in, and holy crap this iem is my jam! The bass is insane, and the stage has opened up quite nicely. This iem is absolutely incredible.

The crazy cool thing about the Quattro, is that I can go from my full-sized rig (VC's, Morpheus, HA300mk2), and back to my Quattro with RU7 and not feel like I am missing anything. Two competely different but equally awesome presentations, that are so engaging it's nuts.

The Quattro really is something special.

This album really shows off what the Quattro can do with bass, and it's one heck of a ride.

Start with the volume low and work your way up and hold on. Enjoy!

Is it just me who doesn't think their Quattro is great for bass? I absolutely adore them, but for me it's very mids-forward. There are quite a few times where I'll EQ some more bass in with them. I wonder if it's unit variation, different ears, or if I just need to get a more powerful source (currently using JCally AP10, usually use at around 50% volume through my phone and 4.4 mm connection, which gets plenty loud for me).
Would be interested to know what source the Quattro bassheads are using... I have been eyeing up some of these new Fiio powerhouse dongles (e.g. KA13, BTR15).

It's a combo of source and cable that bring out the bass that Quattro is capable of. Not a great stock cable for deep and mid bass.

The tips used also have a big impact, pun intended.

I am using Spinfit CP100. They were bass light for me with all the stock tips, as well as with the Divinus Velvet, of which is all I have tried so far.

The bass on my set, can take your head off, and shakes my ears. I can literally feel it, and it rivals my full sized headphones, of which are known for bass played from a system known for bass.

I am a basshead, who loves mids by the way, and the Quattro is perfection for me.

Spinfit CP100 tips with Cayin RU7 powered by my iMac, or used with the iBasso CB19 Y cable and my Galaxy S22+ with power bank. I am also still using the stock cable, and really don't see a need to change that amazing cable.

N7 + Tsuranagi. They help.

Make no mistake, the Quattro is not an out-and-out basshead IEM anyway (my current basshead obsession is the Campfire Cascara, which makes Quattro sound lean and balanced in comparison lol).

I agree the Quattro is very mid-centric; Penon are midrange specialists anyway, and the Quattro’s midrange balancing tilts more towards the lower mids than most, which I personally find very pleasurable.

Anyway I brought up Quattro because it has the best quality bass among the Penon IEMs (and I’m familiar with all but 3 of them) in terms of texture, timbre and control in how it rumbles, slams and dives all the way down to the lowest registers.

I do think the stock cable is fundamentally well matched which is why I didn’t change it for the longest time, but the Hansound Vodun has done a lot to enhance its lower mids and bass as well as air, imaging and clarity, so much that I don’t see myself going back.

I have an ifi Gryphon on the way, so I can get the most out of the Quattro.

I plan to use my RU7 w/LO to the Gryphon.

I know it's not the N7/Tsuranagi level, but hopefully close. . .

Thanks for the extra info! I think I'm hearing what you're hearing, which makes me feel more satisfied with the shift my little AP10 is putting in. It's definitely all about the lower mids with the Quattro, which will always be a bit controversial in the audiophile community, but I also love it. It does mean that they're a bit less versatile in terms of what genres they excel at, and it can be a bit more jarring going to them from a more "audiophile" set, but it never takes me long to adjust.

Also, I confess I haven't been doing them justice up until now. Had some very exciting packages yesterday arrive in the form of the Tansio Mirai X as well as some Divinus Velvet tips. Foams have beaten stock tips and my Dunu S&S tips for 90% of the sets I've tried, and the Quattro seemed no exception at first, but a combination of the quality of the Velvets as well as the TSMR-X burning my brain in to a brighter, clearer sound has meant the foams are off and Velvets now on the Quattro, and it's definitely improved them overall. A little less thickness in the lower mids and better treble has improved the perception of bass quality, and also meant their performance is less dependent on the song being played. I loved them before, but now I love them for even more of my library. I also got the orange Penon Liqueurs yesterday, but so far the Velvets have triumphed over them for the few IEMs I've tip-rolled. As Wes S said above, it's all about the tips. Interesting to hear the Spinfits could bring more bass to the table over the Velvets!

As Dsnuts suggested over in the Tansio thread, the TSMR-X makes an excellent companion to the Quattros. Complement each other so well. Need to give it some more time do some more comparisons, but currently not seeing a place for my beloved Canon II's between them!

I use iFi Hip DAC 3 and Dethonray Pegasus SG1. Both are quite comfortable bringing out the best of Quattro.

Congrats! (Why not Quattro though?)
I have massive respect for Quattro but I adore 10th AE. It's so coherent yet has a wider stage and I've mentioned in my review that it has the best EST implementation in that price range.
