I don't see the appeal of this product.
I wanted to get one when it was announced almost half a decade ago. By the time it came out, it didn't compete with the original market, it competed with everything else.
I got a PSP in the meantime, and I grew out of gaming.
I got into higher end audio and my iPod mini was already giving a very clean signal.
It has buttons rather than just a touchscreen, which is nice... but not for the asking price. They're charging 229USD for a 256mb upgrade. A 1GHz processor version is 700USD... and it can't outperform any of the current smartphones even in terms of SQ. I don't understand why they are asking so much money for what is essentially an ARM DS/netbook crossover.
 
If you can root a Samsung phone and it supports Voodoo Sound you can spend much less for a better audio experience.
 
There is a lot of fanboism for small niche products that many people justify purchasing. I'm just clearly not their market. It can a do a lot of cool stuff... that I can do on my cheaper iPhone.

Because phones have ****ty DACs and weak amps.

Yeah, I got a PSP too. I'll never grow out of gaming.
The Pandora has a better DAC than the mini.
The asking price is definitely correct considering that this thing is a FULL computer crammed into a pocket-sized package. It costs about as much as a laptop, because it IS a laptop. With a touch screen. And full gaming controls. And phenomenal sound. And ridiculously good battery life. That fits in your pocket.
It can outperform EVERY smartphone in terms of sound quality. 
 
If Voodoo sound is software it is impossible for the sound quality to be improved. Software can't magically make a DAC not suck, or give an amp more power.
 
I'm not a fanboy by any means, I don't even own it yet. And you can do thousands of things on this device that's impossible on that locked-down hunk of garbage Apple refers to as iOS.

Not a bad idea by any means. It's a PocketPC with gaming controls.
Implementation is great. Sure, it could have a better CPU, but that's why they're making a Pandora 2.

Pointless, no. PocketPCs have millions of uses.
Overpriced, no. It's a laptop. Most mid-range laptops are about $500. 
Underperforms? It's almost as good as an E17 stock, and it supports any USB device and has a line out port. Which means you can use ANY amp and ANY USB DAC you choose. No other device can say that, and still fit in your pocket.

Correction, pocket pc's used to have "millions of uses" now phones and tablets can do tasks quicker and more efficiently.  Ahhh but wait wait you'll of course argue that the sound is better or something stupid yet again.  well Hold on everyone has to carry a phone right?  so when the x3 comes out your whole argument will be muntered.

Please explain how anything is relevant.

Your iPhone can't use an external hard drive. Nor anything that uses USB. So yes, millions of uses, and many more than an iPhone. iOS and Android are both locked-down, iOS especially. With the Pandora you can do anything that you can do with Linux. You could theoretically use the Pandora as a portable Linux-based server. The entire thought process behind this device is that you can do quite literally anything with it. ANYTHING. 
 
Dude. The audio portion of the main board was designed by an audiophile. It has about as much power as an E17. Did you even read what I said?
 
It IS a laptop because it can do anything a laptop can. Yeah, it has an old CPU. Doesn't really matter. The OS runs smoothly and so do emulators. It can multitask and it has a full-featured version of Firefox.
 
The Pandora 2 will be about as good as the first one was compared to everything else that was available when it was first conceived. Only difference is that now the developers actually have enough funds and employees to get it out before it becomes outdated. It will likely have more power than the Quad-Core 2GHz PS Vita, which is quite ahead of its time power-wise.

Shame ubuntu's already running pretty good on my phone, just imagine what they will be like by the time the pandora 2 is obsolete....... sorry I mean released.
 
Have the funds and employees (and time machine to go back 5 years and get this outs so its not outdated)

Yeah? And? Your phone doesn't have a USB-HOST port. Nor does it have gaming controls. Thus it can't do everything the Pandora can. My Droid is running Ubuntu. It runs great. Doesn't mean I can use it to its full potential.

No i think you'll find lack of caring for this discussion or the pointless product is not being backed into a corner.  Your statement on the steve jobs being dead showed your age/mental age and it was worth pointing out.  It is simply not being able to muster enough "care" to motivate my to write anything on this thing.  It is pointless and will utterly be proved so when it dies out.  I think people can and will look at the device and facts /specs/ reason and just see that it is a completely niche and eclectic piece of hardware that stands no chance because the designers were just far to late to the party.

Just want to say that iPhone 3GS can work wirelessly with an external 1TB hdd via a battery- powered wifi enclosure called Patroit Gauntlet Node (using SMB of AcePlayerPro app); I am using it now to stream/play flac. There is a similar product called Seagate Satellite (with 500GB storage). IIRC there are a few more out there. All of which can be bought for under $200-300.

I just don't see this device as a portable music player, especially with the X3 coming out soon. Overpriced for emulating old games, but its a niche product and being overpriced is acceptable for me. The features are great, but for $700 I can buy a refurb laptop with an i7 in it, or a bunch of Nexus 7s.

I'd look for that if my iPhone didn't go through the washer and lose its wireless capability. 
 
Either way, I don't care anymore. I'm getting the Pandora for myself this Christmas and it will be part of my portable rig. I was just seeing if others wanted to do the same considering all of the possible things you could use with it. Quite literally any amp, any USB-based DAC, and any format you want to use, it can do it.
