The Open Pandora: An ultimate portable player?

A few thoughts, which you (or anyone) can take or leave.

 - If you found "bog-standard earbuds" to be jaw-droppingly good, your opinion of SQ means very little in the context of what Head-Fi members are interested in.  No elitism, just fact.

I found bog-standard earbuds to sound jaw-droppingly good when listening to them plugged into my Pandora. They don't sound jaw-droppingly good (as you would expect) when plugged into any other device I tried them with (which isn't a lot I admit - iphone 4, HTC Sensation).

I was just giving a potentially helpfull example, which you (or anyone) can take or leave because I made it clear that:

Once again, I wasn't having a go at you (well, not intentionally, but I understand how it could've come across and I apologise).

Something I would say is that in the link you posted, the main argument seemed to be that it was the best ampless source he'd used.  You can buy a lot of portable amp and still have money left over for a portable source, for the cost of one of these, and in an audio-only application, it will be (subjectively) far better, in my opinion, when it comes to versatility (especially if your amp is also a DAC), useability (interface), portability and aesthetics.  It will probably also be more capable in terms of available power.

I just discovered we can control the brightness of the Pandora's power LED, from software on a scale from 0 to 255!
It also has 5 other leds in various colors, all of which can be controlled from software, and one of which is also dimmable.  The others can be dimmed with rapid switching if need be!

How sweet is that?  I can't believe they don't mention this in the blurb, it has such great geek appeal!

It's not a computer without the blinken lights!

I know this is not strictly a hi-fi feature, but I'm sure you will appreciate the geek-value of a device where even the power led is hackable.
Play flac and ogg-vorbis?  No problem!  Someone inventes a new audio format?  No problem man, we can even hack the power LED!!

(I found out how to do this because I wanted to to turn off the power LED when playing games in the dark - it can be distracting or even painfully bright.)

Before anyone might complain that this is wildly off-topic fanboy spam, let me retort in advance that he is a whiny little brat, his momma should spank him to teach some manners. :)  It's not necessary for anyone to take this jocular insult personally, unless you insist on complaining against my enthusiastic and friendly post.  k, thx have a nice day now

Put a SIM card slot in it and I'm sold. All I want is Internet access and I'd buy it,...so I can have my games, audio, and pocket computer all's in one!!! :D

It already has a Wi-Fi card built-in. It doesn't have a SIM card slot, but if you have an android phone you can hook it up to the Pandora's USB port and use the internet tethering option on the phone to have internet access on the Pandora wherever you go.

^ Why wouldn't I just use an Android phone though?

I don't see the appeal of this product.
I wanted to get one when it was announced almost half a decade ago. By the time it came out, it didn't compete with the original market, it competed with everything else.
I got a PSP in the meantime, and I grew out of gaming.
I got into higher end audio and my iPod mini was already giving a very clean signal.
It has buttons rather than just a touchscreen, which is nice... but not for the asking price. They're charging 229USD for a 256mb upgrade. A 1GHz processor version is 700USD... and it can't outperform any of the current smartphones even in terms of SQ. I don't understand why they are asking so much money for what is essentially an ARM DS/netbook crossover.

If you can root a Samsung phone and it supports Voodoo Sound you can spend much less for a better audio experience.

There is a lot of fanboism for small niche products that many people justify purchasing. I'm just clearly not their market. It can a do a lot of cool stuff... that I can do on my cheaper iPhone.

Heh, I'm not interested in tethering another device. I'd just get a 4G tablet instead. And, there are quite a few with excellent sq available. I have requirements,...if they aren't met I'll deem a device as something that's below my personal specs. Rule: something like this lacks 3/4G it's getting passed over.

Thanks anyway,...

Let us have a poll: who needs 4G in a pure music player? I do not as that is what my iPhone is for.

Let us be fair, is that "personal spec" of yours not "selfish"? If not, then why my asking of a bigger/cheaper internal storage (i.e., SSD or 1.8'' ZIF HDD) is "selfish" and "off base" in your eyes?  Read your comments towards me in the previous page again (quoted in the following) and see if they are fair.

This is rediculous. Just have compatibility with SDXC,...that's all they need to do.
You guys have really gone in a amazingly unintuitive and useless direction in your selfish search for what you want. What a waste of the Pandora developers time,...you really don't know crap about what your requesting.

Hey, I may be a hard sell but I'm not a selfish azz. Really, these requests are totally off base when it comes to the ideals behind this project. I'd love to eventually see a small touchscreen version, but it'd have to be based on real usability. The same as this device is now. Real specs, real functionality, real users & developers working together. These others are wayyyyyyy off base.
I'm honestly sorry I somewhat started this debate,...this thing turned out to be quite good from what I've read. I'd love to be able to get it. But I just spent over $1,200 on my bike riding stuff - time to lay low before the Mrs burns me britches!!!

First, this is a "pure music player"? And your IPHONE is a "pure music player"? You don't know how to bring it, do you. Especially since the Open Pandora is not a music device first, and neither is your iPhone. You really are a confused individual,...ain't ya?

Second, I asked if the device has this feature (3/4G), I didn't "request it", as some of the "selfish" people have done with rediculous requests for features that are just totally out of line with the whole project. I guess you sat back & meditated until the right time for you to concoct a retort. ***FAIL***

Now, you really need to learn to read BEFORE trolling & picking a fight. Especially since what I deem important for me as a necessary spec is exactly just that,...for ME. But, you own this already and it's so much better than your iPhone,...right? Review please,... ;)

Stupid project, bad idea, worse implementation.  Completely irrelevant/pointless/overpriced and underperforms in the current market.  Goodbye, unsubscribed, hopefully this thread/product can die off.

> Reply: Take it to PM if you like, we are not adding to this thread. The title of this thread reads "the ultimate portable PLAYER". I did NOT say my iPhone is a pure player. I will leave it to others to say who is confused.

> Reply: how is your asking of 4G not out of the line of this project? Are you the developer, how can you say what is out of line and what is not? I suggest bigger storage, I did not say it must have xyz. The developer does not have to take my suggestion. Just like you, I will simply leave the product and get something else. Please stop personal attacks here. Some meditation is good for you as well.

Now, you really need to learn to read BEFORE trolling & picking a fight. Especially since what I deem important for me as a necessary spec is exactly just that,...for ME. But, you own this already and it's so much better than your iPhone,...right? Review please,... ;)

Reread what you posted, and reread what I posted.

Have a good day,... ;)
