Guess we must have far different experiences then.  Going from an iPhone 4 (very low impedance and pretty linear) to:
 - Arrow 4G
 - Porta-Tube (this added some really nice warmth when I had it)
 - NFB-12
 - NFB-12 + LD MKIV

Differences were very minimal when volume matched, and main change was colouration (in the tube set-ups).

Maybe my ears are shot

Well for a while I thought my SR80i sounded better than my 325is's, and I thought maybe my ears were shot, especially when I was hearing way more detail out of my SR80i' listening through the Adcom/Meridian than I was with the 325's. But when I bought the LD/Schiit, the 325's really shined, I couldn't believe it myself because I was always against buying a dedicated headphone amp, but in the end, like I said, I am very impressed with the 325's and the LD/Shiit setup, and wished I would have took the advice sooner. And I always listen to my headphones at moderate to mid volume, I don't want my ears to get shot like yours did!. I'm totally kidding! Cheers!!!

When I purchased my Alessandro pro I was listening to it first with a CD walkman. And I was amazed how great it sounded. Much better than my SR325i from this CD player. They improved with my headphone amp (Creek Obh 21SE). Than I thought that they are picky about amping. Recently I listen to them a lot with an ipod touch and they sound great. Most of my listening time is divided between the Alessandro Pro and the SR325i. The Alessandro Pro is an amazing headphone but the SR325i is unmatched for my ear when it comes to vocals. A lot of singer sonwriter stuff sounds amazing. Also I am probably not a basshead and the SR325i has for my ears just the right amount of bass. Anyway, I am drifting away. What I wanted to say is that in my experience you both are right, yes, the SR325i can sound as if needs the right amp and not they sound great of an mp3 player....

looks nice next to the burson. might be a little overkill for them though.

For what you get, preamp, sabre dac and a headphone amp, seems pretty reasonable.  Maybe it's as good as having tubes.

.After hearing how good a combination the inexpensive Little Dot 1+ and PS1000 make, nothing surprises me anymore.

The way I see it, even if the 1793 is a bit too much amp for the 325i, (and i'm not saying that it is), he'll just be ahead of the game if he decides to upgrade his headphones later on.

Only just started looking at these forums but have had my SR325is's for about 3 years and absolutely love them. My serial is 4141.
When I get time tomorrow I guess I have 200 pages for SR325 goodness to trawl through.  This is going to be fun
