The (new) HD800 Impressions Thread

Some damn nice looking rigs gracing the page of this thread ... just lovely, folks! Thank you. :)

I use nothing at all in the signal path. All functions on the Mac that could color the music are disabled. I did use EQ back when running JRiver, at the infamous 6kHz region like everyone else, but now, having switched to Roon, I find no need to use EQ at all. Which I prefer ... because EQ does present somewhat of a veil. I am just enjoying pure, direct, nearly perfect analogue sound.

Also, I would never mess around with the HD800 bass; to me, it sounds just perfectly realistic. And don't forget ... the HD800 will always sound thin, bassless and too bright until they're properly driven.

I had to google "SDR mod" and no, I don't use it or any mods at all, just aftermarket cables from Wywires. My HD800 are stock and both pair are around SN33xxx or so. I keep two pair so me and the wife Annette can listen to Joe Bonamassa DVDs together. That's a blast.

I did hear the HD800S once, at a headphone meet, and didn't care for them. They sounded like the HD800 with a sock stuffed inside. And the HD820 ... forget it. Ugh.

As always YMMV .... and, happy listening.

14 years after its release the HD800's can still touch utter reality reaching right in ones soul if properly driven.

On my amp section modified MDave stack it can move me to tears

I got a pair of used HD800 with the SDR mod installed. Been thinking of taking it out and just using Equalizer APO for all EQ. Has anyone else switched back from the SDR mod to stock? You prefer it or no?

Thanks :)
I took the sdr out fairly quickly when I had the Hd800 but I'm in the minority, imo took the magic that makes the hd800 special away. Others obviously feel differently though :)

That was what I was afraid of. That the mod will take away what is magical about the original HD800. The original HD800 just feel so right for me and I bought it new since 2017 and have been baby sitting it so it still looks like new today.

With this Oblivion amp, I need no mod for HD800. It's magical.

I took the SDR mod out of mine earlier tonight......I actually didn't realize how fragile those are so I ripped one with tweezers so I will have to order new ones if I want to do it again. Just using Equalizer APO now to mod the sound.

Yes... from someone who bought it from the guy who make it.
I learned its all about making the 'donut' firmly touch the cilinder around it to dampen its resonance frequencies.

How many of you left the Sennheiser brand pressed vilt cups in? I took them out the day i bought them giving more open sound

I do not believe in touching the HD800. It is already as open as you could want it to be.
Do you also use its original pads still?

I replaced them by thicker leather ones.
That gave a bit more sense of bass.

Yes I only change recently to the ZMF pads. At first I didn't like the slightly warmer tone but gradually I got use to it and the comfort is much better.
