The (new) HD800 Impressions Thread

Just got a pair in and have been listening to them over the weekend. I created an EQ profile ahead of time, plugged them in, and just started listening. Oh my, these sound so natural. Just absolutely effortless sound. The large soundstage trades some level of energy for realism. Even the bass, which sounds less tight than Planar bass, sounds as wide as you'd experience with speakers. Off my Lyr+, I definitely prefer it out of the tube input stage compared to SS for an even more organic presentation.

Without EQ, the upper mid dip kills my enjoyment. I felt the same way with the HifiMan's I auditioned. If I couldn't EQ, I'd just listen to the HD600.

Now I'm considering trying the SDR mod so I can take out one filter in my EQ (and apparently it helps a lot with 6khz resonance, which EQ doesn't do anything for). Though I am thoroughly enjoying what I hear, so I don't feel any need to do so for now.

I actually tested this and it was plenty sufficient with the same amount of detail as any dedicated dac amp.
That's amazing, thanks for testing !

Power Holdings is the American distributor and they have product fact sheets and manuals for all the current Violectric offerings in English.

Other A90 owners think it pairs well? Did they try anything else?
I have and I did. If you are a music lover and appreciate the music and artist's creation instead of listening to capacitors and diodes... then it's heaven.

Cheers!

Why waste money on a pair of HD 800s? 10 euro earbuds from the grocery store let you listen to the music instead of high tech plastic and giant drivers

Why waste money on finding negatives when you can enjoy everything? I enjoy listening to music with my $15 IEMs just as much as with HD800s and HD 820.
And money is for wasting...everyone has their own ways of doing it. You keep finding negatives in life...I will keep finding positives.

Cheers!

This is what I said, and yet your passive-aggressive confirmation missed the point completely.

Have a nice day! Into my ignore list you go. I'm sure I won't be alone. :)

Serial number 45699, bought new in 2017. I'm still loving my HD800 with tube amps. It's only 4 headphones I keep now along with HD650, Grado GH1 and Susvara. Past headphones used and sold were ZMF Atticus, Eikon, Verite Open, Beyer T1 1 & 2, LCD2, 3, X and 4, HiFiMan Arya. He1000se.

I have the SDR mod but I never install it because I like the original HD800 as it is. I bought a pair of HD800S for my son and I listen to it for a while but still prefer the HD800.

Here's my setup with Yggdrasil original.

What musical genre(s) do you listen to and what cable is that?

I found I'm enjoying my 800s (not S) quite a bit out of my Phonitor 2. I listen mostly to jazz and classic rock.

I'm not compartmentalized by genres. I listen to quite a lot of spectrum. Classic rock, jazz, classical, blues, ambience, vocals. That is a Forza Audioworks Noir Hybrid HPC, a blend of silver/copper.

2 other tube amps I use with HD800 are Oblivion and my 300b amp.

Hello,
I think this is the thread for the black HD800S too. Well I just got my dream headphone which have been set to be my login avatar on my laptop for more than 8 years. I don’t know why it took me so much time to buy famous Sennheiser products and I only have my hd6xx for less than a year.
My main headamp is the Zen can signature from Ifi. I love using my hd6xx with it though I know it is not optimized. Tube? Too expensive and I didnt like any entry-level hybrid tube amps that I owned.
For the first minute listening to my hd800s , I prefer its mids to that is on my hd6xx . There is more nuance and detail. Overall sound from the hd800s is more 3D but still cohesive. I remember the silver hd800 was more incoherent, crystalline (colder?) and wider.
I feel the current hd800s has a much more lineage connection with the hd6xx compared to the hd800. Many said the LCD2 is a upgraded headphone for the hd650/6xx but I don’t feel so. They are too different.
I may change my mind latter but for now I actually don’t like to come back to my previously beloved kissmod hd6xx :).

Is that a Piety? How does it do, going from LCD2 to HD800?

HD800/S are special. One of a kind. I boost the hell out of my HD800 bass with a PEQ low shelf filter, takes them next level, for music and especially movies. :L3000:

Yes that is the Piety. I only use it with my LCD2 because the hd6xx mids out of the Piety is a little simple and 2d compared to that out of my Zen can sig.
I have not tested my hd800s with my Piety yet. The hd800s has something in the sound that is very engaging and lively compared to the hd6xx and the lcd2. But it lacks a little tactile touch in return for the microdetail.
I am having a problem with my hd800s. I hear an unbalanced volume from the left vs the right driver. I take the pads out and look into the drivers but they are in perfect cosmetic. So I am a little worry now :frowning2:

I got a pair of used HD800 with the SDR mod installed. Been thinking of taking it out and just using Equalizer APO for all EQ. Has anyone else switched back from the SDR mod to stock? You prefer it or no?

Thanks :)
