I just went on the Spirit Labs website and was shocked at the prices. I bought the Ragnar Edition on August 2017 for £568, great headphone based on Grado with dual driver cups
I originally chose an olive drab colored leather, to give it a little different flavor....I mean, nobody makes green headphones, right? And I am trying to find some aluminum cups from a 325, which would look nice with green....but my leather guy, in his enthusiasm to get this project done for me, grabbed the wrong leather for the top. He knocked a little bit off the price, I told him about about a couple of other ideas I have for projects (a better fitting strap for my Argon, a leather replacement for the suspension strap on my 9500s...he seemed to like all my ideas and got kinda psyched about the whole thing and offered to make me another Grado strap for the same (super cheap) price as the first one. This is the 'prototype' ...needs a little more padding, otherwise it is perfect. It has enough detail to not be boring, but it looks 'stock...' in a good way.
Thanks Panda. We had a long, detailed, conversation about the headband....and I also let him freestyle a bit. I like the results...it just needs a little heartier padding.
Mods you can see:
- Stainless steel wire mesh grills (much more open than stock grills)
- Sennheiser HD600/650 cable (more flexible)
- DIY velour and pleather pads. (better sound + vastly improved comfort)
Mods you can't see:
- Fuzzor mod (no idea how significant this mod is)
- 1 layer of arctic cotton batting over the fuzzor (held in place by ear pads) (helps attenuate some treble frequencies)
- Resistor adapter to improve channel balance (does what it's supposed to do)
Results:
Key points:
- linear bass down to 10hz
- dip at 5-6k reduced attack of snares and snappy sounds
- 10-12k is no longer prominent/piercing
- 15k+ is slightly emphasized giving 'air' to sound
All mods are fully reversible and non-destructive, as they should be.
I picked up a set of Monoprice Monolith M565 for $80 recently...they were on sale for about 4 hours. It was an absolute steal, because even in stock form they sound great, and they look stellar:
but of course being the Godfather of the Mod Collective, I couldn't leave them alone. So I swapped out the pads and opened up the cups and took out some foam that was holding back the sound.
In umnmodified form they were bassy and warm...maybe even a little dark. Soundstage was good, but a tad closed sounding.
So I peeled back the velcro cover and opened the cups
removing the foam increases soundstage, treble and , surprisingly makes the bass deeper. Without the foam the bass is bordering on epic...like, Argon deep...
