The JPS Labs: Abyss AB-1266 Impressions Thread

So, I've been using my WA33 EE JPS as a pre to my CFA3 now, instead of my now sold 3ES. The with the TCs, the bass extended lower and is more prominent with the 300B 3ES. The WA33 and it's 2A3 tubes, etc., are more 3D for sure though. It brings a more tubey sound too. The bass is a little worse, but not terribly so. I need to listen to the WA33 as a pre more, but I think I preferred the 3ES as a pre, with the 300B tubes. I may try to get a dedicated 300B pre

What 2A3 tubes are you using?

I played a bit with https://autoeq.app/ and found an EQ that really ticks all the boxes for me:

Filter Type Frequency (Hz) Q Gain (dB)
Peaking 804 3.14 -1.8
Peaking 1282 1.37 -4.8
Peaking 1915 3.04 4.4

I've seen that different measurements differ a lot in 250-500hz area and EQ:ing that never works well. Also I've noticed that EQ:ing bass ruins TCs bass. However where measurements often do agree is the area between 500 and 3000hz. To me that tends to also be the problematic area that brings certain elements too much forward and collapse the soundstage. I limited the EQ area to this 500hz and 3khz and that seems to work really nicely. The above eq basically puts anything between 600hz and 2500khz on the harman curve and leaves everything outside of those boundaries untouched. To me the result is much more natural soundstage, but the wild nature of 1266 doesn't change. Also that oh so godly bass works finally as intended when applying EQ/filters.

EDIT: Pic of the EQ attached.

So, I've been catching up on some albums from late last year. This is pretty good. It's generic metal, but they do it pretty well. It has caught my attention when many other metal albums have not. A lot of metal is kinda stale at the moment, but this stood out.

Finally moved up to the TC after 6 + years with the Phi. Thanks @CinnamonToastCrunch for a great sell/buy experience.

Will have to list the Phi soon, still a great headphone needs a good home.

I'm right now listening with the abyss TC out of the Atma-Sphere monoblocks and I'm really enjoying it. I can't think of anything to the sound that I'd want to change.

I've spent a fair bit of my audio journey building a system around the TC. the current iteration, I feel, is the best I've gotten the TC to sound. I recently had a friend over to listen to my setups. he started with the Wavelight/Zähl/Utopia/Caldera. moved on to the Meitner/WA33/Utopia/SolP. and then finally the Wavedream/Cary/Atma-Sphere/TC. he said the last system blew everything else away.

I'll probably still go try the new Raal headphones when it's available, but they had better be super good and even if they are, am going to really think hard before plonking down the asking price. the TC is just so damn good already, and am just a bit wondering to myself what's the point of looking elsewhere. maybe some fomo... LOL.

What’s the difference between Diana and 1266 superconductor cables? Seems to be the same except HP connectors, but for some reason Diana’s SC is cheaper

yeah the tc really does that to you… i remember back in the days when i used it as a daily driver. until it breaks your neck. 🤦‍♂️

Fitment/comfort impressions obviously will vary from person to person, but, perhaps strangely, the TC is the most comfortable headphone I've ever owned. Pics of TC and my assumptions it would be uncomfortable, kept me from trying it until this year. Maybe the weight is disguised for me, but the weight is a non-issue, and that includes many all day sessions when I am working from home at my computer.

My favorite aspect on the TC fit is, no seal around the ears. Having a seal around the ears for hours on end always got to me, eventually, with other headphones.

+1
Ears also get hot with other headphones and you can feel the clamp just from the touch. With 1266 ears are ventilated which’s good
